X99 is the chipset for LGA 2011-V3. The i7 4820K is an LGA-2011 socket and will need the X79 chipset.

You can configure Blender to use GPU rendering. Even with 1 modest GPU its much faster than CPU rendering, and Blender can use as many cards as you can put into a machine. The law of diminishing returns does still apply though, so for me, two 1080's is a good sweet spot.

All right, you make good suggestions. Overclocking would make the CPU hold up longer and I might as well as you said its only a minor cost increase.

BlargKing got a reaction from bananaboi in How much RAM do I really need?
8GB will play most games fine. If you want games AND a lot of crap in the background I would say 12 or 16 GB. I usually lean towards 16 just because it doesn't cost much more than 12 and its a bit more future proof.

The fan on your PSU should be facing downwards so it can pull cool air through the bottom of your case as your case has vents on the bottom specifically for this purpose.

BlargKing got a reaction from paddy-stone in I cannot get ANY overclock! Everything I try fails around 2 hours of stress testing. (repost under the correct category)
Firstly, some chips overclock better than others, even if its the same model. People have reported easily getting the i7 5960X to 4.5Ghz stable but I cannot get mine stable above 4.2Ghz.

Also, you're going about overclocking the wrong way. The proper way to overclock is to do small increases, say 200-400 Mhz (I usually do 200Mhz at a time) and then stress test. If the small increase passed the test, then add another 200-400Mhz. Keep doing this until you fail the test, then add a bit of voltage and run the test again. Once you have added enough voltage to stabilize, resume adding Mhz in small increments. Keep doing this over and over until you're at a voltage you feel comfortable with.

BlargKing got a reaction from GoodBytes in Why is Windows 10's installer so picky?
Okay so 150th time the charm. Apparently my SSD was plugged into a SATA port using a 3rd party SATA controller. I plugged it into a port that used the Intel controller and hey fucking presto Windows 10 installed.

I don't know why Windows 8.1 worked with the ASUS SATA controller and Windows 10 doesn't. ASUS didn't provide any driver for their SATA controller which is why loading the SATA drivers didn't work.

What an enormous pain in the ass this whole thing was. With any luck someone else with this mystery issue will find this post and it will be able to help them.

BlargKing got a reaction from NTDaws in What do you trust more: mechanical or solid-state storage?
Its sort of an odd thing. I would trust an SSD more than an HDD for longevity up to 10 years or so. I do a lot of video and photo work, plus complete system erase and reinstalls 2-3 times a year, so my SSD has a lot of data moving through it. So after 5-10 years I probably wouldn't rely on it anymore because of NAND wear, which I feel is more consistent than the wear a HDD takes. If I wanted a time capsule where I could write data to a drive, chuck it a drawer for a 20 years, and then pull the data off, I would trust an SSD as the NAND can usually hold the data that long, where as a HDD is likely to seize up.

Honestly though, well build HDD's endure just as well as SSDs in many cases. I have 4 WD Black drives in my machine that have been going every day for the last 3 years. I trust them so much that I have the 4 set to be a RAID 0 array (I do a weekly backup of course, it would be foolish otherwise). But so far they're happy and I feel like they'll last a very long time. I feel like HDDs have the potential to live longer than SSD's because their causes of wear aren't as consistent. For example, I have a 22 year old Toshiba laptop with its original 350 MB hard drive that boots up every time no problem.

Or I could replace 6 caps on a working machine and not bother with finding a new computer and cannibalizing this one. Besides, theres no tech recycling centers within a reasonable distance of my home.

I never asked for opinions on if this machine was worth repairing. I'm going to repair it. I'm asking what the best parts to use are.

Its worth it to me. It costs less than 20$ for new caps and about an hours work to restore a usable computer.

Performance is perspective though isnt it? A lot of people here build their own high end gaming PCs of course theyll say its bad because they come from using top tier machines.

My mother has a previous generation Mac Mini and its a solid little computer for non-intensive tasks. Web browsing and media streaming work flawlessly, and it can handle some modest gaming tasks such as Minecraft. I even played Left 4 Dead 2 on it at decent settings so gaming isnt a complete loss on it.
IMO if your already familiar with OS X or willing to learn it it can be a lot less hassle as a daily driver than Windows.

Welp now the activation control panel cant reach the activation servers even though my internet is good. Also keep getting a "tech help" popup on every webpage so I think somehow something nefarious has gotten past my antivirus.

Going to go on the side of caution and wipe my drives and re-install Windows 8 and then upgrade to 10 through there, and change all my passwords.

The more memory you have more stress you put on the memory controller. But any board that can handle quad channel memory and/or has 8 DIMM slots should (in theory) be built to handle the increased load. I've got 4 sticks of DDR3-1600 running in quad channel without any problems.

Always Intel for me, because AMD doesn't do ultra high end. Thats why professional video editing and 3D rendering machines are all Intel. AMD chips just don't come as powerful.
