It isn't really a backup though.
You have duplicated the OS and are using both copies actively.

So recently you may have heard that iTunes is now technically illegal in the UK as it is capable of ripping and burning CD's that contain copyrighted material. Turns out backing up ANY computer that contains any form of copyrighted content (Music, films, images from da web etc, legal or illegal) is also now banned.

So here's a thought. What about RAID?

For the people that dont know about RAID and are here for the read, Here is how raid works:
RAID 0 – StripingRAID 0, also called striping, can be used for two or more hard disks or SSDs. The goal is to improve performance.
RAID 1 – MirroringRAID 1, also called mirroring, is used to create an automatic copy of your data. RAID 1 writes your data to two separate disks, and if one fails, you still have all of your data available on the other one. The drawback is that you loose half the capacity.
RAID 0+1 and RAID 1+0RAID 0 and 1 can be combined with most RAID controllers. For a RAID 0+1 or RAID 1+0 (also called RAID 01 and RAID 10) array you need at least four hard disks.

Obviously RAID 0 is fine but RAID 1 and 10 make clones of the disc (Mirroring) for redundancy however that technically means your cloning/backing up the disk in real time. Is that technically illegal?

I don't run raid and it's not really a major concern but I thought it would be amusing if out government started raiding data centers

You're going to have to provide some links.
Either way, a ssd is going to be the best performing, quietest, and most reliable solution out of the 3. Reds are needlessly expensive for this application and Velociraptors are so loud that I wouldn't use one if it was free.

    Hey there, @InfamousSynergy!

As you can see a lot of pros and cons to all the possibilities.
WD Reds are specifically designed for RAID/NAS use and tested in 24/7 environments as well, as you mentioned. However, for gaming I wouldn't recommend them. From what I can see, your focus is on the speed. And since we are talking about a gaming HDD that will fit your budget, you should take a look at WD Black drives. Though it might not be a good idea to put them in a server: http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.aspx?id=760

The SSD indeed seems like your best option, because you don't need big capacity - just high speed, but as @Dimwitted mentioned if you intend to write to the server constantly, the regular SSD will most probably fail.

WD Velociraptors have impressive speed with 10 000 RPM and Pre-emptive Wear Leveling (PWL) that ensures reliability for your gaming read/write operations. Another upside of those is that they come with a 5-year warranty. http://wdc.com/en/products/products.aspx?id=20

However, if you truly intend for your server to be working 24/7 with a high workload on the storage, I would second the opinion to check out the Enterprise HDDs as well: http://wdc.com/en/products/internal/enterprise/

    Hope this helped.
