2 SSDs with PCI-E Raid card

InfamousSynergy

Sup y'all, first post here :)

I am running a WDC Green 2tb as my boot drive and it is painfully slow. I do have a 100gb ocz vertex 2 ssd but where Windows reads it as 83GB, it's simply not enough as a boot drive. I was thinking about getting a PCI-E raid card and 2 MX100s

What are your thoughts and how would I go about setting this up (Advanced level, I know how to install the drives/card etc)

Raid card: http://www.novatech.co.uk/products/components/controllercards/sataraidcontrollers/m159.html

Feel free to suggest other parts but I can not order online and that's the only local PC store that sells raw components so it would have to be sold by this company!

Thanks :)

I wouldnt bother with a RAID card that cheap. Just use your onboard controller if youre not willing to buy a proper one.

I use 2 Samsung 840 EVOs in RAID0 and get 1GB/s sequential read and writes. The speed increase is noticeable in day to day use.

Ok, it's just that I was told that not using a seperate raid controller card would melt the CPU :/

I have an FX-6100 on a 990fxa-gd80 if that helps :/

the first thing eh... well its bullshit but you can just use the onboard raid solution just change it from ahci to raid

Hi InfamousSynergy, sorry if my concern is a bit out of topic from the question. Why do you need to do RAID on your drive?

I have across this article : http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/ssd-raid-benchmark,3485.html
(which I found really helpful to understand pro and cons in building RAID for SSD) and my understanding is that, as a typical general user, personally I do not find myself necessary to perform RAID on the SSD as it will give me just enough speed that I need. However, I assume that you have very concrete reason to go for RAID because it cost more.

To answer your question, I believe that it is sufficient to just use onboard RAID controller. Personally, I have not yet come across with case of CPU melt due to using the onboard RAID controller or anything similar. However, just for precaution purpose, please make sure that your cooling system is just good enough.

On how-to RAID setup, you may have a look at MSI website and search for your motherboard type. Read out their user manual and have a try.

Hope to hear good news from you.

It'll be no better than going with onboard RAID, and your boot times would be noticeably longer.

That card has an IDE connector on it, don't think that is really meant for performance or SSD tech., not that it can't do it but it looks like something the wayback machine dropped off on accident from a parallel universe (get it parallel).

Just get the SSD and plug it into the Mobo SATA ports, then sell the slow as hell drive to some unsuspecting sucker.. I mean buyer. I still don't understand Green drives (5800 or 5900 rpm), they go slower so you sit there and wait spending more electricity with other components, makes no sense to me why you'd ever want to wait with a computer or buy something slower on purpose. Price? Calculate your personal time spent waiting, hopefully you value your time when you make that calculation.

I roll with sigs off so I have no idea what you're advertising.

This is NOT the signature you are looking for.

Nah, I was thinking 2 ssd's in raqid for the sheer speed factor. drives are to slow for me and my vertex 2 is a 1st gen ssd so is still slow!
