Sound distortion when turning Windows volume up to 100%?

If for example, I have my Windows volume set to 100% and my application volume to 50% I get sound distortion through my headphones.

However, if I set my application volume to 100% but lower Windows volume I don't get distortion.

Why doesn't Windows like me using 100% in Windows? :P

I also get distortion through Windows when the sound effect plays as you change the volume level at anything above 75ish..

I'm using a Maximus VII Hero motherboard with a pair of ATH-50X's.

Why would this be happening?

I don't like 2D games...I just couldn't get into them.. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Excess gain maybe? Distortion is too vague a word to gauge the issue.
