Build-Off Week 7: Video Editing Workstation

Welcome once again to the LTT Build-Off! The rules and guidelines can be found here.

The challenge this week is to build the best video editing workstation that you can for $1,600.

A few tips:

  • Don't underestimate the power of hardware acceleration and GPU compute.
  • You will need to find a good balance between massive storage and redundancy for important files, the usefulness of a scratch disk, and the speed of an SSD.
  • Video editing programs can be very RAM and CPU intensive (and are multithreaded).
  • While not actually required, I highly recommend an IPS panel. The better colors are important for video editing.
  • On that note, better resolution or multiple monitors is great for a workstation.

I know those bullet points are a lot to fit in, but it's all about the compromises when you have to stick to a budget.

What are you standing around for? Submit your part list! :)

NOTE: As of this build off, a revision has been made. You no longer need to include a mouse, keyboard, or speakers/headphones in your build. A monitor is still required. This may change on a case by case basis for future contests. For example, if a contest revolves around certain brands or colors, I may require peripherals. However, I will make that clear in those posts.

Update: The poll has been added. Voting will run from Tuesday the 27th through Thursday the 29th.

UPDATE: We have our first tie! The winners are @chromeboy42 and @WoodenMarker.

My thoughts: Went for the i7 3930k and firepro v5800 becuase in this workstation enviroment the user would benefit from the extra CPU horsepower and errorless gpu. 60gb ssd for os and video editing software, then 3tb hard drive for mass file storage.

so this imaginary person has an imaginary $1600 to spend on an imaginary video workstation and he doesn't have a keyboard and mouse...

Err...yes. When I set up the build-offs I decided to make all peripherals mandatory. I've been going back and forth on whether to "repeal" that or not.

Since you're the only person who has entered so far, I won't mess anyone up if I do it now.

yeah, the problem with periferals is they are so personal.

I've updated the rules, so peripherals are not required, unless specified otherwise. Your original build is fine :)

EDIT: My reasons. Note I do video editing on a regular bases so I am not making this up.

I only included 1tb drive in raid 1 because I personally have never used more than 1tb in any one project and I keep all my other files in either my ssd or in my nas.

Monitor wise 23 inches is my minium and this was the cheapest I felt comfortable putting in this build.

I've included a optical drive since some clients of mine still prefer to get a physical copy of the work.

I know nothing about sound cards, but a friend of mine who helps me with soundtracks recommended this one.

I didnt get a z87 mobo because I wanted a quiet rig and decided to not overclock.

Cooler was chosen for watercooling since it should be quieter than other coolers at the price.

Didn't know which 7970 to get so I chose the cheap one.

Everything else is pretty self explanatory.

Reasoning:

 - CPU: great CPU, multithreading support is offered in many video editing programs, Seidon cooler should allow for a fairly good overclock.

 - Motherboard: Good motherboard, offers some expandability with more pcie and sata ports. Also is z87, a plus, and has varied i/o for maximum compatibility

 - RAM: Good blackline RAM. It offers high frequencies, but the cas is somewhat lacking, so I would under-clock the frequency to overclock the cas.

 - Storage: Use 120gb 140 for current project, place old projects and other files on 4tb hard drive. Allows for some expandability, maybe to a raid 1 array in the future.

 - GPU: 7970 offers great performance, opengl support allows for faster rendering. This card is already overclocked to 1ghz.

 - Sound card: Great sound card, especially for the price. Makes up for the sub-par sound on the motherboard

 - Case and Power supply: Case has great airflow, solidly built. PSU is great for the price, it is modular.

 - Monitor: 2 23" IPS Asus monitors at 1080p offer great color reproduction and high work efficiency.

Spend your spare quarter on a gumball or something...

It counts when you submit your build. It doesn't matter what happens after that (although if it goes down, feel free to update it with better parts).

CPU: A high end very powerful workhorse

Cooler: Can't OC your CPU if you don't have anything good to cool it with

Motherboard: For high stable OCs with some nice features like good built in sound

RAM: More is better, lower latency is better, along with high frequency. This is CAS 7 1600MHz RAM

SSD: Great for a boot drive and a small scratch

HDD: RAID 1, RAID 0, whatever you want, two good quality disks and they don't break the bank (also, they're cheaper than the Seagate ones)

GPU: According to Sony Vegas Pro 12 benchmarks (on their site), the GTX 570 is one of the faster cards at rendering and is pretty cheap

Case: A case is a case, but this is a great one with good airflow, sound baffling and looks nice

PSU: you need a quality PSU to deliver the power to your high end components

Monitor: I don't care how fast your render times are, if you don't have a good quality display that you can rely on to provide the proper colours, you might as well not edit

While I probably wont be entered this week, just wanted to share my take!

Can't break the budget even by 1 cent.

and...

QNIX 27" 2560x1440 Samsung PLS Panel LED Monitor - $288.90

Total: 1593.72

CPU and Socket: Upgradeable to 6 core and beyond in future, something other platforms cannot do.

Cooler: The Seidon 120M allows you to overclock that 3820 greatly beyond stock speeds.

GPU: OpenCL is more forward looking than CUDA, and the 7970 ghz edition is no slouch.

Storage: Fast and RELIABLE storage is the key, and some additional mass storage doesn't hurt. Intel and Seagate have great reliability.

Optical Drive: Pros DO use optical media, especially more than consumers. Plus, it's only $15.

Monitor: Epic 27 in 1440p, Samsung PLS panel. It will perform great, and is better than multi monitor setups.

Aesthetics of rigs matter
