Two Birds 1 Stone, or Drop the Idea?

Indus Monk

I have a 29 inch CRT TV in my own Room. My mom wants to replace it. This gave me the idea to buy a new TV and use it both as a Monitor and as a TV. Is that a good idea?

This is the TV i picked out: http://www.snapdeal.com/product/micromax-32c6150fhd-81-cm-32/674757861265#bcrumbSearch:sony%20full%20hd%20handycam|bcrumbLabelId:64

If its a bad TV... Pick me a better TV from Snapdeal.com/amazon.in/flipkart.com

budget: Rs22000

I will not get a dedicated monitor.... and mu\y monitor is a DELL E-1914H

A TV that size as a monitor (at that resolution) will look pretty bad. Unrelated to the resolution, there are only a small number of decent TVs that can be used interchangably with monitors while keeping the picture quality.

why?

coz if a TV is not suitable for a monitor purpose then there is no point getting the TV since i don't watch TV at all.

burn in?

When you leave the same image on the screen for a extended period of time the pixels will get damaged and you will see a hallo of the image on the display, not a problem for moniters as they are designed to stay on a desktop background for extended periods with no pixel damage, but it will fuck a TV.

Thats not exactly true, I bounce back and forth between a tv and monitor for years and have 0 burn in on my tv

  • 2 weeks later...

Then buy a decent monitor instead of a TV?

Why do you need to replace the TV?

I don't understand

The main idea was to replace the fat old TV... I thought , OH if we are getting a new TV, then might as well use it as a large screen monitor!

If this is going in your room, and only you will be using it, and you don't watch *any* television, then getting a TV for a monitor isn't a very good choice in my opinion.  I've had PC's hooked up to one form / size of LCD TV or another over the years, and I just don't like the way text appears on the screen.  I don't know what it is about TV's, but it's just not comfortable to look at for extended periods.  It's great for gaming / video watching (YouTube, Netflix, whatever), but for web pages / etc, it's very hard on my eyes, even if the text sizes is enlarged.

Your original post says you won't get anything *except* a TV, even though you wouldn't be using it for its original purpose -- could you help us understand this choice?

What a load of...

1. TV Burn is such an old concept & was an issue with CRT monitors , NOT LCD.

2. What kind of TV? Better the TV, better the quality.

3. You'll only get 60 hertz on TV @ 1080. Hence the need for expensive "tweeks" to get the picture looking good, ie. 800htz refresh mearly "fills in" on the software side, gotta account for response time, contrast etc... Monitors clearly state that, TV's do it with marketing weirdness

Been using a high end Sony 55" LCD with amp for years. Georgeous 1080p gaming & flawless picture... Even at two feet away. But you has to pay... Only down side. But there are many good things about it

Depends on the type of TV and if it has any features to prevent it.

Burn in was a factor on CRT and Plasma screens (and to a lesser extent, OLED). It does not affect LCD screens.

You can use a TV just fine. The only thing to look for would be direct pixel mapping so that you can have a sharp image on the screen. If you can turn off overscan on a screen with the exact pixel count as your target resolution, you should be good.

Most of the choices in that website that you gave do not have a 1920x1080 resolution screen for 32" models, which may be a problem (unless the HDMI input supports the panel resolution of say 1366x768). The Philips that offers the right resolution seems to have a fixed overscan, on the other hand.

This seems to be the safest choice for your intended use (a bit over your stated budget):

I have a number of Dell 17" LCD's at work that would disagree with you.

They weren't used for TV - instead they were connected to a PC, but if you leave a relatively static image on one long enough, it *will* 'burn in'.

LCDs can get image persistence, but it should be temporary and correctable (unlike burn-in which is caused by non-uniform luminance degradation, and as such can be compensated for but never reversed). LCD panels have improved throughout the years as well, and I have not seen modern panels exhibit significant image persistence.

I would imagine that panels with local dimming may also get non-uniform backlight degradation. LED backlights last a very long time though, so I'm also yet to hear complaints about this.
