Windows 10 Start Menu

grimcrash

Hi!

I upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 10 about two weeks ago. (I skipped Windows 8 because of the Start Screen with the tiles). It is true that Microsoft has brought back the Start Menu, but not quite the way I liked it. I actually like the way it looks, the right side with the tiles, and the left side with the classic start menu. My huge problem is that I can't pin things to the left side. I don't want to see the recently added section, and the most used apps, I want my own friggin shortcuts. I've already tried ClassicShell and Start10, but those completly change back the Start menu to look like windows 7, and removes the tiles, which
I don't want. Does anyone know an alternative program, that doesen't change any of the apperance, just lets me put shortcuts on the left side? Thank you for your answers, and sorry for my bad english.( as you can see from the picture below, I'm from Hungary)

Absolutely same here!!! One of the most used things for me in Start menu was Jump Lists of the programs I have pinned (for example, I had Notepad pinned, and the arrow near it allowed me to open a note file without needing to browse explorer. Pinning VLC allowed me to open playlists just with a click of Windows key, hovering mouse on VLC and clicking on a playlist I want).

Now I can't pin those to the left. And pinning to the right just gives me a tile and that's it. I can't access certain files fast and need to browse in explorer, or make gazillion of shortcuts on desktop, which I don't want to.

I would also really appreciate help with this, since apps on this list are all about changing whole start meniu.. http://www.pcgamer.com/tips-for-customizing-windows-10s-start-menu/

Hi!

You could have used a start menu replacement instead of avoiding 8 tbh

To answer your question, yes you can pin things on the start menu but it pins it to a tile on the right

honestly you could just install start 10, since there is literally no reason to ever open the tile apps, I never use the start menu, I pin my favourite programs to the taskbar and use it like a dock

As of now there aren't too many useful tiles, but the i really like the e-mail one and the weather information, and maybe there will be more usefull ones in the future. Things I don't want to necessary click on, but shows me useful informaiton as soon as I open the Start menu. Kinda like the widgets on Android. So yeah I want to keep the right side as it is, I just want to customize the left side, because I don't like having too many icons on the desktop, and I definitely don't want anything on my taskbar. Usually there are a lot of open windows on my screen, and if the taskbar is full of icons, I can't manage the open windows comfortably.

I don't think you can put the shortcuts at that place.

Instead you can put it right here:

Yeah, I know I can put them there, and I know that by default Windows 10 doesen't a allow me to put them on the left side, thats why I asked if someone knows a handy little tool that lets me do it:)

Here's the problem, there's no such feature in the RTM build of 10. There used to be in the early builds, but the f$%king idiots at Microsoft and some Insider didn't want them. Remove choice? Yay? Now, all you can do is upvote the suggestion in the Windows Feedback app or use other software.

There's one trick though. Pin what you want as a tile. Them unpin it. It should appear on the left. Now remove everything from the list you don't want. It won't work that well, but it will do the job.

Well I guess I have to wait a little more, until someone makes a tool for that, or Microsoft brings back the function.

I find it easier to just use Windows key+s to get to search

You can't. Ypu can have those that you most use. You can pin programs and folders on the right section.
