Best Budget DSLR Mic

Where are you going to be recording from?

If you're trying to record clean audio, get a recording device connected to the line-outs or soundboard being used. Otherwise a directional mic will have to do, but even a directional shotgun mic will still pick up background noise if it is loud enough.

It's acoustic... So no mics at all.. There won't be any noise in the hall other than the performer...

Directional shotgun condenser or cardioid condenser.

Directional shotgun: you can have the mic a bit further away.

Cardioid mic: close to the performer for the best quality.

I guess you want something that can mount and record into your video camera, here are a few examples for up to 100GBP in cost:

The line out of the H1 can be put to the Line in of your camera.

Frak it, I'm over thinking things.  You just want something to mount on and connect to your 650D, right?

Get either the Tascam stereo

http://www.amazon.co.uk/TASCAM-TM-2X-Video-cinema/dp/B00FAC3KPK/ref=sr_1_17?ie=UTF8&qid=1438820328&sr=8-17-spons&keywords=stereo+microphone

or the Rode mic

If you can find a way to get both, get both mics, cos there will be situations where you want to use the Tascam stereo mic and other situations where the Rode directional mic will be better to use.

No, i dont mind if its a recorder... actually thats a plus... but i dont think i can afford the h1 and a mic...  and i dont think the H1 is the best for the concert scenario

From what i have heard, the tascam has a lot of noise... and doesnt sound very good...

Ok, thats quite good! I cant hear much bass tho...

Do you know how it will perform in a quieter environment?

With no amps/speakers... all acoustic, sitting about 10-20m away? in a fairly small concert hall...

not  sure, have a look on youtube see if anybody has tested it

you are not going to get bass on microphones like that, you would need to individually mic up every instrument, there is 100% no way around it, that is just the physics of sound

What do you think about the Tascam DR-05 and 07mkii?

they are basically the same thing as the Zoom,

The DR05 is very similar and has line in for use with external mics/lavs,  i can recommend the Mic J 044 if you ever need a lavalier btw

Better or worse? no idea, listen to audio tests, they are basically the same thing just a different brand, I know the zoom is very very popular (Curtis Judd uses one very often and he has great videos on sound and lighting)

I would avoid the audio technica atr 3350 - its not that great, and the Mic J is better (seriously go check out the sound tests on Curtis Judd on youtube, the Mic J came out as one of the best bang for buck lavs that he tested, and he has tested like 30 or more)

the Zoom H1 has a 3.5mm input

ok thanks... ill look around and see what i can afford...

I was originally thinking of filming these concerts (its a competiton for students... and my parents film me... they are still stuck at 576i dvd quality.... :( ) So i wanted to upgrade them, by using our DSLR, but now i think of it... i might as well just buy a decent 1080p camcorder... that will have 5.1 surround sound, and usually sounds pretty good...

Or at last resort, use the old camcorder just to record audio, and use the DSLR for the video!

Thanks Everyone for all your help!

Meh camcorders do not necessarily have great audio, but yeah you could use the old camera for audio

Alternatively you could get a condenser mic with a 360 degree record pattern (like a blue yeti) and sit it in the middle of the stage and record it to a computer

Hmm... the computer thing wouldnt be very practical... i dont think my parents are that keen on getting good audio...

Especially as we would be moving around quite a lot...

Also, the camera's lens doesnt have a constant aperture... so that wont be very good...

Zoom, Tascam, Rode, Sennheiser... all good brand names with a solid reputation for their products. You won't regret buying any of their products as long as your expectations don't exceed what the product is designed to do.

I have Sennheiser lavs, Rode shotguns, Zoom and Tascam recorders. All wonderful tools that are serving me well.
