Wifi not staying connected

Spiritose157

Okay, I'm going to try keeping this short and simple.

Basically, for whatever reason, my MSI Laptop keeps getting kicked off the wifi conncetion and I can't do anything about it. Every few minutes I will suddenly drop connection and the only way to reconnect is to turn wifi off and on again, but considering that this takes around ~20 seconds, every few minutes, it's getting very frustrating.

As I understand it, there aren't enough channels on the router and hence why I keep getting replaced by other stuff, but is there a way to stop this from happening or at least force my connection? Is there anything else I can do (such as getting another WAP or even laying a cable, though I'd rather have a free solution)?

Laptop: MSI CX61

Router: Thomson TG782T

Thanks,

Spiritose157

model of the notebook please?

Have you looked for a updated version of the wireless driver?

Please spend as much time writing your question, as you want me to spend responding to it.  Take some time, and explain your issue, please!

Updated the OP with that info

Regarding the drivers, I don't think I've tried that yet, so I'll give it a go now

Since the router is a DSL router and is probably property of your ISP. I would  suggest that you contact your service provider tech support and ask them to switch the wireless broadcast channel to a different one as there may be a lot of interference or congestion on the "default" channel that it is currently using. Addition of a high gain antenna can also help. They are around $10 US on eBay. Changing the default power management properties of the adaptor can also assist in alleviating this problem.

I'll give my ISP a call tomorrow morning (it's already 10pm here) and hope to get somewhere from there.

Do you have any recommendations for an antenna?

Just get a regular rubber or plastic antenna that has at least a 9db boost. something like this:http://www.ebay.com/itm/9-db-dbi-dbm-10db-dbi-dbm-RP-SMA-2-4-5Ghz-Wireless-WIFI-WLAN-High-Gain-antenna-/300836080446?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item460b3a4b3e. something like that will work to boost your signal a little but make sure that the one you get has the proper connector (where it screws on to the router) Most wireless routers are RP-SMA, but not all, so pay attention to what you have on your router and order the correct one.

5$ says its the modem causing the problem

those thompsons are total garbage

heres what you wanna do

buy a new router..and bridge your modem  to the new router..that will turn the modem into just a dumb modem the way it should be

and the new router will do all the wireless and networking

If you need remote help fixing something on your computer

I can help over Teamviewer if you wish

The modem may be garbage but it has been my experience that bridging the modem and a router is not 100% effective and creates a lot of issues on its own. In theory it is great but in practical application and usage it can be problematic. It also requires a little networking skills/knowledge. Especially when you have to inevitably have to troubleshoot the bridge/connection.

if the bridging works in the firmware of the modem..there really shouldn't be any problems

the new router would get the public ip from the modem and all the routing stuff would be turned off in the modem

you'd have to do a little research tho on if the modem even has the option to be bridged

Do you own the router or is it provided by the ISP?

I'm pretty sure it's provided, but wouldn't I be able to just switch the router with a new one and just leave the other one laying around until my ISP takes it or whatever?

PS, yeah, I'm a bit of a noob with networking (y)

You probably have to use an APPROVED modem. One that is approved by your ISP as the will have to configure it on their system as well. I would contact the ISP and see 1. if they allow you to use your own router on the system and 2. What are the approved routers for use on their system. Many ISP are very controlling in this aspect of their services. Some do not let you bring your own equipment into the mix as it creates a lot of problems for them and their customers. They want everything to work a certain way and this is controlled by what interfaces with their network. Many will not let you use anything else but their equipment on the system for a myriad of reasons, one being the ability to guarantee the "quality" of their service and the second is usually being able to charge you rental on that old (many times paid for) modem.
