hello fellow doges

my cpu temps are at 69-74C at idle

my specs are

4790k

H100i Gtx

z97 mark S

16gb ripjaws z

sapphire r9 290x 8gb vapor-x

thinking of changing le thermal paste, what do you think?

With those temps, TIM is not the issue, it has to be a bad mount, redo it from the beggining (Of course clean the old TIM with isopropyl alcohol) and just remount it, and check if the cooler's pump is working. TIM gives you a couple degrees difference, you either got a dead pump or (more likely) bad contact over a mistake during mount. Happened to me, the backplate got stuck on the mobo's backplate, and my temps were in that territory, once i remounted it, high 20s. If you got arctic silver 5, use that, really, it barely matters. If you need to buy some, get some MX-4, NT-H1, Zalman STG2, PK-1, GC-Extreme, IC diamond, etc, whatever is cheapest, they are all high quality TIMs.

Just gonna emphasise what people have already said, you'd get those sort of temps at idle with no cooling whatsoever, so that would lead me to believe either the pump is not working or there's no contact between the CPU and cooler. So check your pump RPM, and remount the cooler.

I accidentally turned off the pump on my h105 once and was getting around 80 degrees on my 4790k while simply watching a 1080p video. For context with the pump actually turned on, it idles at 25 degrees standard clock, max temps on stress test 65ish degrees.
