Internet problems!

I have problems with my internet for a long time and I wanna solve this now,

My pc gets like 1.5Mbs down and 4Mbs up... My first problem why is my upload speed 2.5 times faster than my download speed??

Second, if I use an ethernet cable and then do a test I get like 66.81Mbs down and 3.84 up, so my upload speed gets a bit slower and my download speed is like 44 times faster.

My WiFi receiver is this bad boy  Is this the problem or is it my wireless router?? With other devices like my phone I have the same speeds like 1.45 and 5.35 up.

If this problem is caused by my router please give me some good alternetives.  :)

*Update*  Test with others pcs and laptops give the same results standing right before the router increases the speed with 0.2Mbs.

Thanks in advance

Sounds like your router is plugged in the wrong way, rotate it by 90 degrees to swap down and upload speeds.

All jokes aside:

* If you have good speed whilst being connected via cable at least the modem part of your router is fine

* Test the speeds again while standing directly in front of the router to make sure it's not just a case of bad reception

* If, like you said, the problem persists with different wifi clients than it should be a problem with the wifi router, try to get an replacement or even better an external wifi access point which connects to the router via cable

* Set a day aside and do speed tests via cable on different times to make sure it's not just the overloaded network of your ISP causing the problems

* Make sure the connection your modem/router has is stable. If possible check if there are many disconnects, resyncs etc.

Sounds like your wireless router is the bad guy. Test the wireless speed with another PC to verify the problem. If it is slow with another PC or laptop then get a new wireless router as it is the limiting factor from the evidence you have provided.

Did I help you to fix your problem or at least did offer somewhat valuable advice? Consider giving my post a "informative" or "thumbs up".

USB wifi cards can cause issues like this, though provided its in a USB 2.0 port it shouldn't affect you that much, if you using an extention cable to move it away from your case make sure its a full USB 2.0 extension not a cheap flimsy one.

What model is the router?

Having different upload and download speeds is normal, usually. But your wifi speeds are very bad compared to your cable speeds. get a better wifi access point, or a better wifi receiver.

What do you mean with that, do I have to put the router on its side, or is it upside down?

Thank you so much for the help I'm following al your steps  ;)

I plugged the receiver directly into the desktop and the speeds were equally bad, so thats not the problem thanks for the advice!!

Here is the router model: http://www.zoobab.com/bbox2

OK yes that router is going to slow you down a lot over wifi, I wouldn't expect as low as your getting but best bet is to upgrade it asap.

So, do you have any suggestions? Do I have to buy like a 400$ router like Linus does to get better speeds or would a 50 dollar router be good enough?

You don't need a $400 commercial grade router like Linus. I'd suggest something with wireless N 300 at least (more if you can afford it) check you can find config guides for your ISP so you know how to set it up.

Of course not, it doesn't look like you have any demanding requirements so you could probably get something cheap ($30~) from TP-Link, D-Link or Netgear, I think ASUS might also have some half decent low end routers too. As long as the one you choose has wireless N and enough LAN ports for what you need you should be good.

Walls can make a huge impact on the strength of your WiFi, depending on the density of your walls you may need to get a better router or something else to boost your signal, but since it is only 2 walls and I'm assuming you live in America (known for their paper-thin walls) you'll probably be fine with whatever router you pick.

No I only assumed because most Americans don't specify where their from and they make up a large percentage of the forum, also yes your English is very good, as good if not better than a lot of native speakers. Are you a native French, German or Dutch speaker?

I just did a bit of reading on how buildings are typically constructed in Belgium and any cheapo router should be able to easily penetrate your walls.

if it is still having problems of been slow till date. why do you not consider a vpn and surf through it. it gives all the privacy and security benefits anyone requires to keep your computer safe from attacks.

Hard wire a pc directly to the modem and see what your speeds are. If they are different then your router is crap.

Because I have a strong interest in geography and European countries, especially Germanic ones.
