Homemade Cardboard Case - Safety?

I have made a case for my AMD barebone Home Server using cardboard. I have cut open the I/O Ports and fan intakes. The system runs hotter than before; There are constantly warm air inside the case.

  • My mom is concerned about the cardboard catching on fire. Does that happen?
  • Does adding a case fan to the system improve air temperature inside the case?

A picture of the case is likely below.

While I can't comment with any degree of expertise... I still feel the need to comment that this seems like a terrible idea.

There is always the chance that it will catch on fire. I would recommend getting a cheap bare bones case to put the server in

What search phrase would I use when looking for a cheap "bare bones case"?

Make it out of wood,

just stick the required screws in the wood and it should be fine

There's nothing wrong with it, and I don't see how it could set on fire unless something in the system did.

Doesn't look like fire hazard, but a real case would be easier

Since the ignition temperature (the temperature at which it combusts due to heat) of common cardboard is something like 400+°C (IIRC) you should be fine.

Sparks are the real danger when using cardboard, not plain heat.

Make a cardboard platform, not a case. The cardboard walls block your airflow and add no structure to your case. I used to run a server off of a cardboard platform (so I could carry it places) and it was really easy. Just be sure to use a lot of cardboard and carry it carefully so it doesn't bend.

Also, use cut toothpicks as standoffs.

Not the best idea for long term but temporarily it's fine cardboard takes a lot of heat to ignite that your computer can't produce.
