What is the backplate for, and what does Amp! mean?

Its literally the name of the graphics card :) Its the "ZOTAC GeForce GTX 980 Ti AMP!"

Stands for amplified in this case. Amped GPU because "and POWER BOOST stabilize extreme AMPed performance."

I haven't had any dealings with any zotac branded items. are they generally decent quality? How do they compare to other manufacturers?

If they released products that exploded often, they wouldn't be on sale in the US for very long. They're not any different from the other brands. They don't have the craftsmanship of something like a lightning edition, or Asus's Platinum Matrix cards, but those often cost more. This would be on the same quality as MSI's gaming edition cards, gigabyte's windforce cards, or ASUS's generic direct copper 2 cards.

my reference 980 is Zotac, havent had any problems except for bad OCs and coil whine (thanks to the PSU)
