Question about Xbox Live membership

hey guys i want to buy xbox one and some online games like battlefield 4 and titanfall so i want to ask can i play these games online without xbox live like playstaion plus in PS4 ? 
or that isn't a must?
and if it isn't a must , what is the use of xbox live?

You need Live to be able to play online, yes. Without it, you cannot.

The only use of XBL is to play online. It's useless.

Yep, it is a must to have xbox live to play online.
