Questions on making the most out of a GPU that lost the silicone lottery

TheDudeWhoTriesHard

So, yeah, after watching OC3D's review on the Titan X and some people were talking about his "noob" overclock, I kinda remembered that my GPU did lose the Silicone lottery. So, there's these guys arguing and stuff in the comment section and one guy said it doesn't matter if the card lost the silicone lottery as long as you crank the power target up to 110%.

Well, I did my own OC on my 780 Ti and cranking up the core and memory clock ever so slightly... well, even with the power target cranked to 110%, compared to a well binned 290X with fairly similar OC, it has an ever so slight gap in performance (around 5-8 frames of a gap on average) even in 1080p and 1440p. If I crank the core and/or memory clock any higher, Firestrike would just crash on me and I'd see artifacts in MSI afterburner.

So, how can I make the most out of a card that lost the silicone lottery?

Hope to try and trade it with someone, for a card of a differnt cooler claiming you're going to SLI it and hope their card is better?

Just remember: Random people on the internet ALWAYS know more than professionals, when someone's lying, AND can predict the future.

1. Underclock it, play for a day

2. Cry because it's weak

3. Reset underclock

4. Be happy because it was better than yesterday

5. Profit???

Well, I'm just asking out of curiosity if there's still a chance to make the most out of a card that lost the silicone lottery. I'm pretty much still satisfied with its performance at stock settings to be honest (plus, its pretty much sentimental value and I don't really care if its stock performance did lose to a 290x because its the best gift i've ever had from my mom). So, pretty much, in short, if you (in this case, me) lose the silicone lottery, even cranking the power target up, even disregarding fan noise for the most performance possible, there's no real point in doing it, right? @.@

I'm just being sincere with my questions since I don't really know that much.

There's no point increasing the power limit if the GPU won't make the most out of the increased core and memory clock speed if you got a card that lost the silicone lottery.

The 780 Ti is still a powerful card.

Just suck it up? 780ti is better than what most folk here have, over clocked or not.

Can you not send it back and complain its not performing to specified standard and then get another one hoping it doesn't do the same thing?

GPU manufacturers won't take back cards for not overclocking. It is operating at standard. Standard is out of box, untouched settings. That is all they guarantee.

That's the great thing about the EVGA step-up program. if you card sucks at overclocking, just trade it in for something a little more expensive + pay the difference and let the dice roll. Of course, if you have the Titan X, then you probably have the money to just buy more until you get a good overclocker. Also, slapping a waterblock on a crappy overclocker can do wonders.
