Windows 7 > 8.1? Is there a performance boost?

Straight
Go to solution Solved by DotoreN,

Most gamers prefer 7 over 8.1, as 8.1 is just really weird to use (imo).

It's not worth upgrading really for the performance, especially if you have the i5 4690k + SSD..

You'll not notice any performance gain really also with windows 10 coming out soon, just wait for that.

Hi there.

I read somewhere that Win8.1 utilizes cores better and in general is better in performance, should I be upgrading to Windows 8.1 then?

I'm using an i5 4690k, Crucial BX100 SSD, WD 1TB - any major performance increase if I upgrade?

8.1 can be nice if you have touch, if not windows 7 works just faster/better imo.

Both windows 7 & 8.1 get a free upgrade to w10 aswell.

I have 8.1 on laptop, and I hate it (but that's my opinion). 10 = a mix of 8.1 and windows 7 from what I seen.

If you have 7 than there is no point in upgrading [Windows 10 upgrade for free for both 7 & 8 users]. If you're building a new computer than (according to Linus himself) Windows 8 does give you some improvement over Windows 7

Start8, Classic shell, et al are your friends.

Eight is technically slightly better .

However I do think MS stuffed up trying to combine the OS for mobile computing (phones ,tablets etc) with that of desktops.

I would imagine very few use touch on their desktops, who would want to stop typing lean forward and put their grubby hands on their monitors?

(IMHO) Win8 with Classic shell >>Win7

There is but it's where you don't have to search to find shit on 7 while 8 drives you crazy. Stick with 7 all the way.

8.1 is pretty stupid to use with touch. It's a far better experience with a keyboard.

I actually had slightly better performance with some things in 8, but slightly better performance in other things with 7. It's a toss-up, if you ask me.

Yeah, this seems to be it. In some cases, 8 is better, in others, 7. I personally find that things are slightly snappier in 8.

Same here. And boot times were immensely better, and those matter a lot to me on my main rig, since I have to turn it off every night.

Not true at all most games get 2-3 fps more on windows 8.1

Windows 10 is actually worst windows in performance but this is b4 its officially out and optimized.
