R9 290 vs GTX 780

minimoose

Is a R9 290 Tri-X for $229 or a GTX 780 FTW for $300 a better deal, benchmarks vary a lot on which is faster, is the $70 for the 780 worth it?

No fanboy wars please!

They're about the same in terms of performance, the extra $70 isn't really worth it unless you want the NVIDIA features.

R9 290, it's competitive.... But if you want cheaper GPU then R9 290, but if you're looking like features then GTX 780.

I'd go for the 780, I'll take more stable drivers + NVIDIA features over higher heat output any day.

780 is about equal to a 290 but a lot more expensive I would go 290x since that is $290

Thats that. If you need to get in touch chances are you can find someone that knows me that can get in touch.

I listed the prices I have, $290 for a 290x is pretty much the same as a GTX 780, how much better is the 290x? I thought they were pretty much the same especially when over clocking

Is that Tri-X used? Because I'd just buy a brand new Tri-X for $240 after $20 rebate if so.

And I'd take an R9 290 over a GTX 780 even at the same price, much less for $60-$70 less. Especially a 290 as good as the Tri-X

Let's see.....do you really need all those Nvidia features? If so then buy a GTX 780, if not then buy a R9 290. Their both around the same level of performance. Simple as that. And when people say heat..........

You can try PowerColor PCS+ 290, it's cheap and have beefy cooler but you might need to flash the card with latest BIOS if u encountered black screen issue.

If you want to compare 290 and 780 i suggest look at recent reviews instead of the old one. Nvidia crapped on the 780s driver support when they released 900 series.

Same card but maybe with a different BIOS.

To be fair, that's a reference cooled GTX 780. The reference R9 290 is a bit further up that chart. :P

Further, GPU core temperature tells us how much heat is left, not how much was removed. And by extension the fan speed and noise that were needed to do it.

I'm just being nit-picky about it, I'd still personally lean toward the R9 290 myself for the price difference. It's not like the GTX 780 was stunningly efficient itself.

Yeah, Kepler had better power efficiently over Fermi but cards ran around the same wattage anyway(R9 290X and GTX 780Ti/R9 290 and GTX 780).

The PCS+ fan went noisy for me(rattled) after a few months, seems to be case for some users as well, it cools really well though :) just leaving that here.

Heat is not the same as temperature.

An R9 290 produces more heat than a GTX 780, meaning your room will get hotter faster than with a GTX 780. The difference is the Sapphire Tri-X cooler is insanely good, so the heat gets dissipated (moved from the GPU to the air) faster so the card can stay cool.

OP, the GTX 780 is a slightly better card IMO, but the R9 290 is a MUCH better deal at those prices.

With Nvidia you get slightly less CPU demanding drivers, Shadowplay, and a bit less power consumption. Up to you if that's worth the extra cash.

Also worth noting is you can probably overclock the GTX 780 a good 20% at least, while the R9 290 comes pretty close to max speed out of the box... you'll get maybe 100MHz on the R9 290, vs getting >200MHz on the GTX 780.
