Hp Vlans

IKILLYOU2468

Hello Everyone.

I just got a Hp pro Curve 2650 switch and I was looking into vlans and don't understand how to do it. (Tagged, untagged etc.)

I was just wondering if anyone could explain how Hp's Vlans work?

Thanks  :)

Update: What I am trying to do is have one VLAN for when I fix other peoples computers and one VLAN for all my own stuff, so the computer Im working on cant see my NAS drives etc.

Its been a while since I used them however...

If you are connecting 2 HP switches together you want to TAG all your VLANs on your trunk

Perhaps if you told us what your trying to do it would make more sense

the Cisco "native VLAN"  is the same as the HP untagged VLAN , you can only have 1 untagged vlan per port

An untagged vlan will pass traffic on a trunk port in a similar way to an access port

Also from memory HP switches were a pain in the sense that you had to assign the port into the VLAN rather than assigning the vlan into the port

edit: also the HPs usually have a Max VLAN setting I think it defaults to 8 so if you want more vlans than that you will need to update this setting

I can't imagine that even HP would change how VLAN's work, since they're kinda standard..

Basically, it's a virtual LAN. You can have multiple vlan's and unless you set up like.. Router on a Stick or a similar setup, they will be isolated from each other.

As an example, if you were going to use VLAN's on your home network, you could have one per floor?
192.168.0.0/24 - basement

192.168.1.0/24 - main floor

192.168.2.0/24 - top floor

(I assume most houses have this physical set up)

I don't know what HP's cli looks like, as I've only used Cisco equipment, but setting them up is very easy. Should be like.. "vlan #" where # is whatever number you want. You can set up a VLAN so only certain MAC addresses can use that port, etc.

So I assume you want both VLANs to have internet access.

so the ports for the pc's/laptops would just be set to access ports untagged vlans  EG, port 1 set to vlan 10, port 2 set for vlan 20

This means they both have access to the switch but not to each other,

The next challenge is getting internet access, this is going to depend on your router.

If your router supports VLANs,  there will probably be some sort of base config for the port this would usually be the untagged VLAN,  then you can raise virtual interfaces which would be tagged VLANs.

However every router is a bit different, by all means paste a link to the technical manual for your router and perhaps I can help a little more.

Your sweitch does have L3 support so it can route between VLANs, however I dont think it supports any sort of ACLs so you would not be able to restrict access to your NAS etc, however I didnt spend long looking at the ACL part so its possible I am wrong....

When I make a VLAN and click on a port it give me four things: No, Tagged, Untagged, Forbid. Which one do i pick to add it to the VLAN?

for the access (laptop/desktop) ports you should pick untagged
