Two adapters at once?

Tiber1337

So I have this deal to buy an ACER X223HQ for 25$ , I think It would be great as a second monitor for watching wan shows while browsing and stuff.

Anyhow, I notice it has only a vga connector, and most new gpu's have displayports.

A displayport to vga adapter is like 40$ , but a displayport to DVI is dirt cheap.

So my question, can I get a displayport to dvi adapter and then use the dvi to vga adapter with that since I already have one? will this work in any way?

PS: I'm already using the one DVI port for my main display and the hdmi port for my tv.

yeah you should be able to, but you may be better off using the displayport to dvi on your main monitor, then using dvi to vga on your new display

what ports do you have in total, that would be helpful

Most likely not, because DP to DVI adapters will only support digital output, but from what I can tell that monitor also has DVI input.

Nope, VGA is analog DVI is both (most of the time) and displayport is digital. You won't be able to convert that signal without an active converter (also the reason why vga to dp is so expensive). Also if you google the screen and look at specs you see that it does have dvi so just get a dvi cable and dvi>dp adapter.

Depends which dvi you have. You probably have DVI-D. (=digital). A vga to dvi adaptor goes to DVI-I. Those two are completely different.

The main monitor has 120hz refreshrate on a dual link dvi-d, I wouldn't want to lose that 120hz somehow

The current gpu (gtx460) has all the needed ports, But I'm looking to buy a new PC in june, and most high end new graphics cards have only one HDMI ,one DVI-D and the rest are displayports

I checked it out, apparently it says it has in the specs, probably just some versions, but most of them don't, I checked pictures aswel

it won't work. DVI-to-VGA adapters don't magically transform DVI signals into VGA signals. You can only use them with DVI ports which are specially-equipped to output VGA signals instead of DVI signals if you attach an adapter (called DVI-I). DisplayPort-to-DVI adapters will only give you a regular single-link DVI-D port.

The same goes for DisplayPort-to-DVI adapters, they will only work on Dual-Mode DisplayPort outputs, which are specially-equipped DisplayPorts that can output DVI or HDMI signals instead of DisplayPort signals when an adapter is attached. Adapters don't "transform" DisplayPort signals into DVI or HDMI. That being said pretty much all graphics cards have dual-mode DisplayPort so no one really bothers to make the distinction. But dual-mode DisplayPort will only change to Single-Link DVI-D, which doesn't carry the VGA signals required to use a VGA adapter.
