Bother needs help deciding on Graphics Card

Hey everyone,

I'm kind prefer nvidia cards more vs amd due to all the past issues I had with them but this isn't about me. My bother doesn't want my opinion so I'm asking for him, He can't decided between the 2 cards below,

SAPPHIRE TRI-X OC 100361-2SR Radeon R9 290X

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814202079&ignorebbr=1

GIGABYTE GV-N970G1 GAMING-4GD GeForce GTX 970

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814125684&ignorebbr=1

He doesn't card about Nvidia being 3.5GB as he is only going to game on 1080p. Not looking for fan boy opinions trashing the other card, More looking for people that own either or and there opinions on them when it comes to overclocking, heat, and sound. He has a GTX 480 SC currently, So this is a pretty big upgrade for him.

Thanks for any future comments.

Personally I would reccomed the GTX 970 because even though it has the 3.5GB VRAM issue if he is playing at 1080p it wont affect him at all. Also I think (not fully sure) that the 970 is a better card than the 280X.

My PC Specs

The 970 is about on par performance wise with the 290x and the 970 get all of the things that come nowadays with a nvidia card like lower power consumption and less heat. I would tell your brother to go with the 970.

I'd recommend the 970 because the 3.5gb of vram issue isn't that much of a concern unless the games are ultra graphics and in a high res... also this page may help a little bit

I recommend the 290x or a used GTX 970.  Don't give Nvidia your money and buying used stops that.

They're both phenomenal cards, but I think the 970 edges it due to it's lower power consumption and heat output.
