HTC One M8 review (yes, it's late)

Guest

So I got one.... and I really like the HTC One M8, the M9 is out, but I don't care, I am going to bother you guys with a review anyway. I am coming from a OnePlusOne. (yeah I know, not a step up but w/e)

Box/Contents

The box is simple yet elegant, nothing too overstated, a white box with the necessary things printed on it, the device and the logo's, with the usual texts.

The box contains a pair of earphones (in ear), a USB to micro-USB cable, the wall adapter, and something that I very much liked: A case for your phone! It's a basic case, but damn it's nice to have one already, not that I like cases much. The phone is in there too obviously, along with a SIM ejector tool.

All the goods are bagged, except the ejector tool and the phone.

Not my picture:

Material, feel and design of the phone

I got the Gunmetal Gray version (actually I would have liked Silver more, but whatever). The phone feels very nice in the hand, smooth and not heavy at all. I just love the way it feels.

It's brushed aluminium and the design is pretty good overal, except for the chin bar. The speakers don't bother me at all, the bezels on the sides are pretty small. (although some complainers never stop complaining, might as well give those people a screen only, see how they like that)

The dual camera on the back does look a little odd at first, but you get used to it. I have to get used to the headphone jack being on the bottom, I always pocketed my phones bottom first, now I have to reverse that.

The power button is placed on an unfortunate spot indeed, on the top right, it isn't abominable or anything, but still, it is a flaw. the volume button feels perfect really, clicky, thin, just no complaints there, the placement is okay too, on the right.

Performance

With a Snapdragon 801 at 2,3 Ghz it packs a decent punch, sure it is a year outdated, but outdated does not equal bad, not in the least. It is still a pretty damn efficient CPU with more than enough power for  every task or app that I throw at it. This makes the phone relevant for at least the coming 2 years. No lagg, also I removed all T-mobile bloatware. The 2 GB of RAM is enough for me, since my first Android phone I got into the habit of closing apps I don't need anyway so 2 GB is perfect for me.

It is a very good performer overal.

Battery

I have been playing with the phone all day, and I can say this: The phone is surprisingly efficient, way more than I thought it would, maybe more efficient than the OPO I dare say. Why this is I cannot tell. I am sure I can get a full day from it. You even have Power Saver and Extreme Power Saver mode if you get in trouble.

Camera

Haven't really played around with it much, but it seems like a decent camera, I mean, for Facebook and Twiiter/instagram it will serve very well, no issues there despite it being 4 MP. (and MP doesn't say everything, not at all)

Sound

This.....these....the speakers blew me away. I have heard the speakers in videos on Youtube before but videos do not do it justice. Astounding, just astounding, the sound is absolutely amazing.

Clear, very loud, a stereo effect because of them being a bit apart, just IN-CRE-DI-BLE sound. I still am amazed.

I have not yet tried the headphone sound, but I am 100% sure it will be fine like every other phone ever. (also depends on which music player you use)

Software

I am on Sense 6, on Lollipop. It is decent software, sadly you get some HTC bloat here or there, which you can remove, but still....

I like Sense actually, equally with stock Android, it looks somewhat classy to me, not overdone like Touchwiz, not that bubbly and intrusive.

I like the Motion Gestures, swipe or double tap both wake it up, one to the app you closed your screen on, one takes you right away to the homescreen, didn't figure out yet which Gesture does what. Lol.

There are more Gestures but have to learn them yet. I know the turning to portrait and pressing volume button for Camera one.

I have not experienced any overheating issues by the way

Deezer, their music app. Jesus they ask me if I want to try it free for a month every time I call them.

I don't want Deezer! I have Spotify!

That case you get with the phone, at least for me, was horrible and started to fray all around and the cover at the bottom wouldn't close properly. I guess you can't complain since it comes free. If it happens to you I recommend getting this clear case I have since it is dirt cheap and really good (LINK - I have the Hard Crystal). Also I would recommend using the Power Saver mode pretty much all the time unless you do more intensive tasks since you won't notice much difference and the battery life is much better (I can get up to 2 days of moderate use).

Apart from that you should really enjoy the phone apart from the average camera :)

I would but I REALLY like the haptic feedback.

Cool, I am still going to see how the M9 plays out after release though. I want to see if the camera truly does get better the gen. If not the M8 will now be cheaper.

Well, they say the M9 camera takes grainy pictures.

Really nothing wrong with the M8 camera for the average user.

Also I find the m9 camera to be non-stylish

Nice review. I hope you made a backup of the bloatware, because updates are gonna fail if system apps have been removed.

Nope, I have not.

But updates don't fail because of that.

Oh my god.... With Greenify on and the normal power saver mode and 33% brightness... The time you can you last on 1% on charge while browsing the Web is absolutely insane at 5 minutes per %

Again, I cannot overstate the efficiency of this phone.

I attribute it to the pretty efficient 801 CPU, the maybe slightly optimized software? And Greenify. Outstanding.

And I don't mean with power saver mode or extreme Power saver mode.
