Gawker ruins Coke's internet kindness campaign by making it tweet Hitler quotes

I don't expect much more from Gawker, its just that kind of place where management would think doing something like this would be a good idea. Also proves that you can't have anything good on the internet without dicks being dicks about it and ruining the fun for everyone else. 

Shame on Gawker, and bad for Coke. I thought it was a decent enough campaign but as always, someone just had to go abuse it. 

 

 

In spite of the courage and optimism that Coke showed during its Super Bowl ad last weekend, it appears that the internet is, in fact, too mean for it to fix. According to Adweek, Coke has now had to pull an online campaign that it launched alongside the commercial because it resulted in the company's main Twitter account spitting out images that included the text of Hitler's Mein Kampf.

 

As part of Coke's ad campaign, it allowed people to reply to tweets with the hashtag #MakeItHappy, which would prompt the @ account to automatically take that tweet and spit it back out as fun ASCII art. The idea was that Coke would turn negative tweets into positive images, but naturally, things got way out of hand. Mainly, that's because Gawker built a script that prompted Coke to tweet out the manifesto's text.

Maybe LTT will become big enough to squash them. Maybe 2-3 sites there are worth saving. Lifehacker and i09 are great, Jalopnik has its moments; everything else is a thorough embarrassment to journalism.

Call me a douche if you want but I usually find these kinds of things hilarious. Like when people voted that Justin Bieber would go to North Korea, Pitbull going to Alaska and plays in a Walmart, the winner of "Dub the Dew" being "Hitler did nothing wrong", Taylor Swift should play at a school for deaf people, and stuff like that.

But it just seems wrong when it's a a major company like Gawker doing it.

Idk its something funny about screwing with polls as anonymous users, no one harmed, no one made any money. But when its a major company fucking with another and then reporting news on it. Thats fucked up.
