At this price point, you can't really beat the 270. Otherwise it would be really interesting to see a build like this!

Not sure if taxes are counted for online orders in Canada, but if not, you could consider using that to stretch it to the real price of a PS4 after everything.

Provincial taxes are still counted for online orders. However it varies by province, from as low as 5% to as high as 15%, so best to keep it out of the equation :)

I almost want to order this build right now. ._. It would be so cool to have a good desktop to replace a console. Hook it up to my TV, game at 720p (TV's resolution) and still get 60fps in new titles!

Going Slightly Off Topic:

I don't get all the whole PC vs Console thing. I personally like both, but if you're talking about graphics alone, then yeah, of course PCs have better graphics, naturally. :)

Many of my friends with consoles have a garbage PC to use for schoolwork and stuff. Why not just combine the cost of the two and get something that's better at doing both gaming and productivity?

But I still like consoles, like the XBox, playing MidTown Madness 3 on it is awesome and quite fun, but that is subjective to each person I guess. :)

thats not console killing thats more like mass torture and genocide while recording it and uploading it to totalysick.com

seriously 1080p 30fps on medium/high is all you have to aim for.

an xbox one has about equal performance to a 7770 which you can get second hand for peanuts, (not a great value new compared to a 270), and the ps4 is equal to a 7850/265.

also consoles arent $450/£300 (uk prices) they're about £1000

console-£300

10x games (AAA titles etc with a discount)-£350 average

10 years of xbox live etc-£350

so about the same as my rig combined with a steam sale.

Well original Xbox and PS2, even Xbox 360 and PS3, made a good argument on processing power and hardware compared to PCs. However now that consoles are PC hardware, things are different :)

There's more to it than that. Since Sony adopted the online fee, consoles have become a subscription service (save the wii u, but these builds don't target that anyway). So it becomes a constant money dump. Not everyone can afford both a good pc nd a console, and many of those who do prefer to invest the console money into pimping their setup. And those who instead only have enough money for one of those find themselves having to choose between paying more upfront or paying more in the long term due to the constant wallet dip from the online service and generally more expensive games. These console alternative builds bring the best of both worlds: affordability upfront and very cheap games together with free internet,

are you smoking something?

using your logic, your pc better last for 10 years to compare.

theres a bunch of console killer threads going around. one thing that bothers me, is guys, include a OS. really.

edit: last comment wasnt directed just at you btw. just realized that came off harsh.

literally any part is subjective though?

I think the OS would be the most agreed thing on the forum relative to parts though. like Im sure we will have a higher % of users agree on windows, then on any part.

What os would you use for gaming besides windows? steam os? Ubuntu? thats a legitmate cost. you cant just not include a gpu because its "subjective". if anything, storage is subjective. theres cheap SSds. you can go either way with a ssd or hard drive and it wont effect game perfomance. /rant

edit: sorry if anything comes off salty. people usually get butthurt when you question if a PC is the best thing in the world. no one has legitimately shown me that for sub 400, I can get a actual gaming machine. let alone the 350$ price for xbone.

Im not gonna push windows into someone that might prefer LINUX.

I do the build and the user picks the os lol.

There are cheap ways to get OS and i wont list them all.

well, you can just steal a xbox. that way its free also.

linux on a gaming rig? Im just saying you cant claim a Pc is sub 400$ or whatever, without including some form of OS. not even for me, but for some random guy who is very limted funds, goes to build a pc for gaming, spends all his money on hardware, then realizes he cant even get windows. someone whos never bought a computer before would never think of it. just saying you cant ignore something that you literally need to use a pc. have to address it in someway.

dont worry about coming off harsh i didnt get your point anyway.

are you saying these consoles will last 10 years and be gameworthy? unless they were using gtx770's/280x's and up (which they're not) they're not going to so low end hardware is fine in a console killer. ive already said the consoles comparative gpu's and with the benefits of changable settings a pc based on them will match them for their lifetime.

my main point is that noone (console gamers or otherwise) should be able to say "derp, thats $600 thats way more expensive than a console" because if you wanna do things like game...with friends....for a while, it isnt overall. plus it ignores the fact that a pc isnt just a gaming machine, without one (or a laptop or tablet) console gamers would be torn between browsing the web on thier phone or console, both suck at which, also good luck writing a CV on them.
