Trouble Overclocking Samsung Galaxy S4 (SGH-I337)

Hello guys! (and gals),

This is my first post on this website, and I am very excited to become a part of this community. My friend Kevin, who you may know as KHerm, showed me this website, and Linus' awesome videos! I have watched many of his videos and so far have enjoyed every single one, but lets get to the point of this post. I have a Samsung Galaxy S4 (SGH-I337) on AT&T and I recently rooted it. This is the first time I have ever rooted an Android phone so I am very new to this. I was hoping to get a bit more performance out of my Galaxy S4, so I wanted to overclock it to around 2.1GHZ (If you think that is too much, or if you think I can go higher let me know. Although I want it to stay relatively stable). I tried watching a few youtube videos, reading a few articles, along with trying a few thing out, but I had no luck. Just to let you know I am rooted and I have SuperSU. I use Root Checker to verify my root. Since I am still having trouble with the overclocking, I came here to see if you guys had any tips or ideas for me to try!

      Thanks!

- Alex

Is there going to be a noticeable improvement?

I wouldn't bother mate because I'm sure it would conflict with any warranties the manufacturer are offering

I agree. Mostly manufacturers don't care if you flash custom roms or recoveries but an overclock gone bad will require you to buy a new phone. They are in a tight space with little to no cooling. If you cause your phone to die because of overheating they wont replace it.

I am not very worried about voiding my warranty, this phone wont be my daily driver in about two months, I am planning on getting the Galaxy S6 when it comes out. If worse comes to worse and something catastrophic happens I can always just switch to my iPhone 5 (I am hoping I don't have to do that :P). And if there is a noticeable improvement or not, I am not sure, it would just be fun to experiment with it.

Thanks!

So to get back on topic, does anyone know how I could overclock my Galaxy S4 to 2.1-2.3GHZ? Once again it is rooted, but I am new to rooting, so explain it to me like I am six years old xD.

You should ask XDA Dev fourms, they are more specialized in phones.

I've over clocked a nexus 7 before.. Just need a custom kernal. Easy enough to install, got a decent clock of 2.0 GHz, from stock 1.0 GHz. But it runs hot as crap, not work it for a small performance increase

My s4 rooted already runs stupid hot. If i leave it covered and charging there is a very serious chance something horrible will happen.

would actually recommend undervolting it to help with battery life. I attemped to do that and messed up, and i carry a battery bank so theres no point for me to do that

Definitely check around on XDA. However, last I read, so long as you are rooted, there are overclocking apps that allow you to do the kinds of things you want.

You should note that there will be a decrease in battery life on the higher overclock.

I keep my S4 in a Defender series otterbox case and it often overheats when at full brightness running gps. If you're in that situation, I would really refrain from doing that.

However, that is only ONE specific instance and if you dont run into overheating as is, FULL STEAM AHEAD!

:D

i personally think UNDERCLOCKING a phone would be more viable thing to do if you just wanna do basic things (longer battery life ftw)

I will check out the XDA dev forums, as you guys suggested. Thanks for your help so far! This seems like a very nice community and I was browsing around different posts today and had a couple laughs, and learned a lot! You guys can bet that I will be staying on these forums for a while!

Thanks!

Unless it was throttling, that's a 100% increase in performance, which is not small in any way you look at it.

OCing is so useless on phones, all it does is make more heat and possibly make you lose performance. Mobile CPU's naturally throttle due to heat, especially Android phones with plastic construction.

It doesn't improve smoothness, and framerate is often locked to 30/60 on phones.  Those apps are there to help you undervolt the CPU, the ability for root-access to change clockspeeds is just a byproduct.

He's not 6, I know him personally, he is a troll.

Kevin, why are you saying that? I was not at all trying to troll during this post at all, I hardly ever (If ever), troll online.

-_- Moral of the story: Don't OC phones, it just wastes battery and heats up the device

You might want to be careful with the bolting a phone. There not destined that way, and the support for it is.. Meh. Ok at best. Kernal do exist I'm sure to support that so it shouldn't be too hard.. But just be careful, u could easily screw it up.

well actually. I did not see much of an improvement graphics wise. Fps hovered around the same on benchmarking, with a slight increase, and performance of the is was the same. It was cool to try but I would not recommend it, unless u are underclocking to increase battery life and make it less warm..
