The Helm - My Finished Build

Captain Matt

Hello all!

This is a very short scope log of my build. It really started when my computer was struggling to ruin Planetside 2 on a Core 2 Duo and DDR2 ram. I had inherited the computer from my older brother my freshman year of high school when he went off to college.

I was at Best Buy and had a brief talk with an employee who mentioned that 'Oh yeah, the Sabertooth motherboards are really great.' So, not knowing the difference, I guess I put an AMD one on my Christmas list. That required a new processor (Phenom II 965)(welcome upgrade to the Core 2 Duo), new RAM. Then we discovered we needed a new power supply and I also moved up from an 8800 GTX to EVGA 650ti. Pretty good for awhile.

The following Christmas I moved up to an ASUS 770. That helped framerates a lot but awhile down the line I started wanting to make some gaming videos. Then I upgraded to an AMD 8350 in February 2014. I've been pretty happy with it. December 2014 is when I did all of the mods.

One last thing I'd like to mention is that my first experience with building computer was in 2007 when I got to help build the family computer with my dad. My dad works for jetBlue, so I keep the little logo in my case in honor of him. :)

I would like to thank the LinusTechTips community for creating the resources that helped me learn as much as computers as I know now. My freshman year of college, I struggled to make friends. So, I startd watching a ton of videos on computers and learning all I could. I came most literally from zero to hero. Thank you! I am IMMENSELY more knowledgeable about computers now than I was years ago. :)

I call the computer the Helm because it's the 'helm' of my operations. Get home, deal with emails, make videos, do schoolwork, game. It's where I do most of my work from. It's the hub.

Also yup, that's a fishing line holding up my gpu. Most discreet way I've thought of. *shrug*

Parts:

AMD FX 8350

ASUS Sabertooth 990FX R2.0

ASUS nVidia GTX 770 OC

Patriot RAM - 8gb x 2 @ 1600mHz

Corsair TX750

Cooler Master Hyper 212

Arc Midi R2

Storage:

Samsung 840 - 128 GB (OS, a few programs)

WD Blue - 1 TB (Games, documents, moar programs)

WD Black 150 GB (from the first Core 2 Duo computer I had inherited from my older brother)

Misc:

Silverstone braided cables

NZXT lights

Blue pcie bracket screws (available at Fry's - I think they're by Rhino?)

Mods:

Painted fan rings

Custom acrylic floor plate

Top fin of CPU cooler painted black

3m DiNoc motherboard lining

3m DiNoc TUF logo

Based on the components and the mods, I reckon I ought to call this build complete. The next component/case upgrade will mean a whole new system. ;)

*I'm unsure of how to order pictures but if someone could tell me, I'll amend it. :)

This is a nice build, not many AMD new builds going on so nice to see, also looks like you have done some custom work / mods to it so thats bonus points :)

I think a nice 120mm sealed all in one liquid cooler would be nice as it would give room on the m/board and let it stand out more, its a beauty of a m/board so why not show it off.

got to love Asus components

Thank you so much!

It's hard to do a blue theme since most high end parts are themed red and black...

My dream would be an ASUS X99 WS (the all black all full size pcie one... such unity)

The fractal cases are the BOMB. I had a phantom full tower before this (23" x 25" with TONS of plastic on the sides) and this case it 19" x 19" with a much more rigid and more minimalistic plastic that DOESNT have a piano finish on it. I was split between this and the R4 at the time, but the top of the R4 looks awful compared to this case.

Thanks for not railing on my AMDness. I've had a great time with this processor.

All mods/extras are listed. :)

Thats a good idea... the two top fans are the SP series for that reason... I really want to do a full custom loop but... now's not the time.

Could probably actually start overclocking though if I just kept it simple and got an AIO... Thanks for the rec...

Also... the motherboard is brown lol. Most people have a hard time fitting this motherboard into a build. I guess I've jsut managed to dress it up enough. xD

I've seen a good deal of mods where they paint the MB, but just that heatsink on the SB alone would rule that one out for me. Nice build mang!

Maybe when decent AMD motherboards like this one take a big plummet and I have a reasonable space I can fiddle with some painting. I'm not too intimidated by it really. I would be a little hesitant to paint the heatsinks though.. Cool ideas...
