Review: Dell U3415W (Ultra-Widescreen 21:9 Curved 34" Gaming-Monitor)

U3415W_5F00_lfp_5F00_0040lf_5F00_bk.jpg

Introduction
Hey there! I recently Pre-Purchased and just recieved the new Dell monitor without really knowing how it's going to turn out. Due to positive reviews of the LG 21:9 34" I gave it a try. Another important thing to mention is, this is actually the cheapest 34" monitor in germany, and it is curved!

I only paid 733,98 €.

First impression
At first we take a look into the box (which is damn heavy btw).
There we can find:

  • a powercord
  • a Mini-DisplayPort to Displayport 1.8m cable
  • a HDMI 2m cable
  • a USB 3.0 A to USB 3.0 B 2m cable
  • a stand
  • several documents
  • the actual monitor

Everything assembled...this monitor is freaking huge, you feel like a commander in a spaceship!
So far I'm loving it!

Pros

  • The size/resolution is perfect, you will not be able to see the seperate pixels from 10cm distance
  • The resolution, the realastate you have with such a monitor is exceptional, from a gaming and productivity standpoint
  • Very low backlight bleed
  • 5ms response-time, pre-calibrated display
  • The stand of that very monitor is very well build
  • The slight curve helps with the viewing angles
  • The osd is very responsive and easy to navigate
  • The monitor in general looks clean and minimalistic, Slim bezels
  • VESA-mount
  • No power-brick
  • Inbuilt cable-management
  • The price

Contras

  • You need a big desk
  • 21:9 is not always supported
  • Using the included HDMI cable only supports 50hz
  • Using the included mDP-DP cable makes the screen flickering
  • Only 60hz might bother pro-gamers

Conclusion

Honestly, I'm surprised. This monitor blew me away and became my new daily driver. I strongly recommend it, if you consider buying it, get a high quality DP-cable with it, using it with the included mDP-DP-cable makes the monitor unusable and using the HDMI hurts my eyes (50hz). Assembly was quick and easy, the hardest part was to carry the package.

In my mind Dell was always overpriced, but they really stole the show with this monitor. I consider this monitor to be superior in every aspect (apart from thunderbolt that I dont use) compared to the other 21:9 34" monitors out there.

The best monitor i owned yet!

Great review.. what did you pay for this?

Also, did dell just re-arrange the letters from the 34UM95 or whatever it is with extra numbers? lol.

I'd take the Dell one over the LG, just because of the stand and the price.

Oh wow, if you only paid e733, then that is actually a really decent price for one of these high end monitors.

Maybe 15 is the amount of old Optiplex's that they had to beat their engineers with to make this product?

Only place i can find it right now is straight from dell. Also the stand doesnt matter much to me because it would be going vesa.

Does the curve distort contents (eg. images, websites and documents) you view on the screen?

One of my biggest concerns is that the curve is not good for graphic design and photo editing. What are you views on that?

Thanks :)

Good question!

The curve does not distort images because its so subtle, however it does improve the viewing angles when looking at the ends of the panel. I do some hobby-ish photoshop stuff myself and I do not have any complaints :)

I kinda like asus's 1440p 21in 1ms 144hz ips panel more...

Waiting for slightly curved 21:9 4k 144hz (probablly more) 1ms ips panels to become mainstream and cheap

Longboarders/ skaters message me!

Another question. How do you feel about the anti glare coating? Do you find it to make the screen appears grainy in any way? Can you provide pix of it please?

Thanks :D

Also, the coating seems to be ok, the picture looks sharp and I can still see my monitor even in broad daylight (there is a window next to my desk) :)

Congrats on the new monitor :D

Im currently waiting for this to release in sweden; was pleasantly suprised by the price here as well (approx €780)!

I have a few questions for you, if you dont mind:

1. What screen size are you coming from? I ask because I wonder if there's any difference in the way you use your computer now (mostly for work, photoshop etc)?

2. Im expecting it to have some backlight bleed - how does yours look?

3. What do you think of the speed of the panel (for fps games)?

Thanks and congrats again on finding an awesome display

First of all, Thanks! :D

  1. I came from 1x 27" 1080p + 1x24" 1080p, Mostly for work (developer, not graphic intense) + gaming.
  2. Very little backlightbleed, I'm quite surprised to be honest, if my room is dark + a black screen you can see bleed in the upper right and lower left corner, it's not too noticeable though.
  3. I'm not a progamer, but playing bf4 is awesome (linus would say immersive). I don't feel like dragging a cursor through mud with 60fps 5ms.

@Kukielka

I love you bro! O.o

Awesome little review which really helped me a lot! But i got one question left:

How is using your other monitors together with the u3415w going? I mean, does the slight curve make it feel weird, having a 24" non curved standing next to it?

Asking this because i want to keep my xl2411t for CS or other fast games and some auxilliary stuff.

Also, you recommend buying a fullsized DP cable with the monitor, if i understood correctly?

Not sure about 24" because the screen height would differ, and my current display setup is only temporary.

But I dont mind having 2x straights and 1 curved, not weird at all. Just make sure your desk is long enough :3

I will soon get myself 2x U2715H, then I can tell you more if you like.

well i only have my 24" so... :P

I currently have a desk problem, mine is only like 120cm long so (i think) the 34" would fit perfectly. But i need a new desk or somethting in order to keep my 24" here too.

Can you put both screens next to each other so that you could use both as your main display (alternating)?

I'm so in love with this monitor. And now it dropped under 700€ ._.

ok dude, my wallet is preparing itself ^^

I mean:

Can you position a 24" (or any other) and the 34" next to each other, so that you could play on both of them? Not at the same time but without repositioning everthing on the desk in order for either monitor to stand in a perfect viewing angle.

Sure you can, all you have to do is move your head a little :) (As example, I play diablo 3 on the 34" and watch a stream on the 16:9 because I dont like black bars, works perfectly for me)
