The calculator from pcpartpicker said I need a 320wt psu. Would I be overdoing it with a 400w psu?

Depends if you overclock. Personally I'd give myself a bit more space with maybe 500W. That way there's more upgrade opportunity. @thunderrails

What is your specs?

 

You can even put 1500w PSU. But it doesn't mean that your system is gonna use all 1500 watts. It's just the PSU is capable of powering 1500 watts.

if PCpartpicker says you need 320 watts and you get a quality 400 watt PSU you'll be fine. just make sure that your PSU has the necessary connectors (2 PCIe 6 pin for most graphics cards)

@huilun02 the pcu is the 4790k and the gpu will be the gtx970

If you're only gaming, get 4690k with 970.

550W is enough.

Get Seasonic 550W PSU.

The pc will be a multi-tasking unit. Need the 4790k for video editing when I'm not gaming
