SLI Question

Go to solution Solved by Real_PhillBert,

but what gen? Isn't 8x gen 2 just like 4x gen 3? Can i run SLI on a PCI-e gen 3 4x slot?

no you cannot run SLI on a gen 3 4x slot, 8x wiring is necessary. Gen 2 or 3 8x will work just fine.

Does SLI need 8x PCI-e gen 3 to run or does it run on PCI-e gen 2 8x?

As long as both lanes will run at a minimum of x8 speeds and the motherboard supports SLI then its fine.

The gen of PCI-E on a board won't matter. just both slots MUST run at a minimum of 8x with 2 video cards installed to enable SLI.

No worries. We are here to answer questions. Dont feel bad about needing to ask from time to time, there is no shame in asking for clarification. :)

Let me clear it up a little for you.

PCI/e 2.0 8x == PCI/e 3.0 4x in bandwidth.

SLI requires a card to be using PCI/e 2.0 or above at 8x speeds.

SLI doesn't care about the bandwidth, really. It just wants at least 8x to work.

By comparison, I believe Crossfire only needs the primary card to be 8x or above, and the secondary cards can be at 4x. This MIGHT be restricted to PCI/e 3.0, but I am not 100% sure about this. AMD boards do not use PCI/e 3.0 yet, so it would be odd if it only worked that way with intel boards, but then AMD boards probably have more available PCI/e lanes.

Anyway, I hope you're fully cleared up.

I have finally moved to a desktop. Also my guides are outdated as hell.
