Destiny (Warlock) - Stats vs. Armor question

I'm familiar with many MMORPGs, but this is obviously a decent bit different in many ways. I'm playing the trial at the moment, and I'm still unfamiliar with how a few things work. One of those things, is stats vs. armor. As an example, I have a green item with 29 defense and 10 strength. I also have another white item, with 38 defense and no stats. I know for most MMORPGs, gear like this would be more dependent on relevant stats than armor. I couldn't find an answer to this question though, so I'm asking about it here. 

 

How should I prioritize stats and defense?

Doesn't have any significant impact until you hit 20, then the real part of the grind, I mean game begins. The stats only serve to reduce ability cooldowns, like grenade/super/melee. My warlock is 28, 1300ish armor, and far as I can tell, just as squishy feeling as when i was level 4. Just now I can throw nades and supers a little bit faster, and look cooler. The gear in Destiny is one of the worst implementations I have ever seen, and I have played aaallllottt of MMO. Most of the way things in Destiny are done have been so poorly planed, it really is a good thing the gameplay stands by itself so well, as I would have dropped it after the first week.
