WiFi mobo or WiFi adapter?

UltraTin

Hey there,

I'm currently looking at a WiFi mobo for my build, the ASUS Z97 Pro (WiFi ac) but I was wondering if getting a WiFi adapter and a non-WiFi MOBO would be better. Any thoughts on this? Suggestions for other mobo would be appreciated too!

Thanks in advance.

Wifi integrated mobos tend to cost more than buying a decent motherboard and adding wireless yourself.

How about the ASrock Extreme 4 and a nice TPLink wifi card?

So in terms of performance for the WiFi, it doesn't really make that much of a difference?

depends on card, and chip on the board

Hmmm, I see. Seems like I need to look more into the WiFi performance of these two. Personally what do you suggest though? A separate WiFi card or integrated one?

Basically it won't make much difference. If the specs of the wifi card are what you want, it won't matter whether it's integrated or PCIE. Only thing is a PCIE card will take away a PCIE slot. Case in point- PCIE wifi cards start around $15. Wifi boards have a $50 premium usually, so the smart choice is board+card.

For windows it probably won't matter since the motherboard vendor will support the drivers.

For OS like Linux or OS X a supported standalone wifi card is usually a better idea.

I was in your same position and ended up getting the Asus Z97-Pro WiFi over the Z97-A (I haven't put the PC together yet though), it ended up costing me $50 more which was the more expensive option, but your case will look a lot cleaner having one less PCI-E card. Which was why I went for it mainly.

Plus you do get extra features as it is a little more of a premium board.

I got a free apple airport, so it connects via ethernet to my pc for wireless :) it does work well and been a solid performer..

that being said, I been interested in wifi mobo's just because little cleaner looking, and if performance is not up to par, just plug the airport express back in..

I was considering this topic for the future myself. Was thinking of upgrading my 8350 to X99 or something and just taking advantage of some built in AC.
