large HDD for games storage

Nachoz88

Hi guys, so first of all, I know theres not really anything like a "gaming HDD" but basically i'm going for a SSD for OS and key applications but a HDD for mass storage. i want something 4TB and more and i want it to be performance oriented. I checked out the WD Black and its exactly what i want but im worried it will be too noisy? Will it? and if it will what else can i get thats performance oriented but less noisy? Hopefully 7200Rpm

If you look into a RAID solution, then definitely check out an Enterprise HDD such as the WD Re3. I have over 32K hours (~3.5 years) of power-on time and it's still putting out the same speeds as a brand new one

317 is watching. 317 is everywhere. 317 is life.

Hi there,

In general the level of noise will depend of the RPM of the HDD. The faster the rotation of the platters and the bigger the capacity, the more noise does it make. So for HDDs better performance goes with a higher noise level. Although for me personally 2-4 dB(A) does not make that big of a difference. However whether you'll consider something to be noisy or not  depends on your personal perception and the level of ambient noise around you. For example – if you have water cooling on your rig you will find the Black drive to be extremely noisy, as there would be no other sound coming from the rig, than the one from the HDD. However if you use air cooling with several big fans – you probably barely notice the HDD compared to the other noises. The WD Black 4 TB drive noise level is about 29 dB(A) when idle and 34 dB(A) average for seek.

Hope that helps.
