I have a rode video mic pro. I use it on my d5300 to record racing at a local short track. It's a fantastic mic for that.

is it meant for direct vocals(interviews etc), ambient sound(background sounds) or as alround mic?

May the light have your back and your ISO low.

Shotgun mics are great for "running and gunning" shots where you're doing interviews on the street (and your car events and such) but for music festivals, that may be more of a challenge. Getting good audio from the audience is a huge challenge regardless of what kind of mics you use.

I don't recommend Rode mics. You can get a much better mic for only a bit more.

I personally swear by my Tascam DR-100mkII. Amazing mic. If you are looking for a shotgun mic, I have had good luck with the Audio Technica AT897.

I've heard good things about Rode Shotgun mics.

Read reviews on Amazon of ones that fit into your price range. See if the pros and cons fit your need.
