Swapping 8320 for E

C3DMaX

Hey Guys,

I managed to RMA my 2 months old FX 8320 today.

I'll send it back to Amazon in a few days and will get the ~120€ i paid back.

I plan on getting a 8320E for just 10€ more.

Do you think i can expect more OC headroom while staying with the same plain old 212 Evo on it?

thanks in advance,

Xeon E3-1231-v3 // 16GB Corsair Vengeance Pro // Asus Z97AR // XFX RX 480 GTR

Talk about a sidegrade, unless the new chips fares better than your old chip in the lottery you will gain absolutely nothing.

Send the E one back as well and get a 4690K.

i dont really plan spending money on a new mobo so yeah.... no (also the 4690k is 200€ which is alot more considering i get the 8320E for 130€)

talking about silicon lottery: isnt this valid for ANY processor?

The 8320E is an undervolted and underclocked FX-8320 so it's a lower binned chip you are very likely to not be able to reach the clocks your previous 8320 did.

you don't need source as it's an evidence...they are piledriver based FX using less voltages at lower clockspeed.

AMDs own slides confirm this. Just save your money and pick up a 6300 instead as you'll not notice the difference in games. And if you're using multithreading a lot you'd want a faster CPU not a slower so the E wouldn't have made sense.

okay okay you convinced me

so lets clear up questions left now:

if i get a fx 6300 instead, how much difference will i notice in tasks that actually use all the "cores" compared to my current 8320?

and is it 100% true in EVERY(to whatever extent one can say this) game that there will be no difference?

also not sure if i can and will do this but how much of an improvement would an i5 4690k give me? ( i chose the asus z97-k as companion for this option)

for example would i get 60fps in skyrim with all those schmexy enb mods? i get stable 30 with all the enb, lighting, texture mods on atm

EDIT:

another question just striked me:

if i were to switch to intel and build a pc with the following specs:

fx 4100 (with the 8320 stock cooler)

asus m5a97 r2.0 (current mobo)

lc power 550w psu

(maybe) a 60gb ocz agility 3

how much would you think i could sell it for?

snip!

intel per core performance (IPC) is up to twice that of AMD so in games intel CPU can be as much as twice as fast...the intel i5 also host 4 FPU (floating point units) where as the FX-6300 only has 3...and intel is as mentionned up to twice as fast...sum this up and you get a much more capable gaming chip...now of course you need a good GPU to take advantage of it.

The system you've listed in the US as a mainstream web browsing machine i would guess would be worth around 200$ tops with a case and all the needed stuff...you are missing RAM as well and a GPU...selling a used system is hard...best buy offers that kind of computing power for brand new at around the 200$ mark...so...yeah!

yeah lol i forgot a lot about this :D

the system would also have 8gb of 1333mhz ram

and a asus 7770 ghz edition

Whenever AMD attempts to cut power consumptions on their processors all they do is succeed and make amazing product as the result.

oh wait, no they dont.

And why should he do that if he allready has a decent  AM3+  board?

What is the point of switching to intel, and pay $225 for a 4690K + ~ $150+ for a decent Z97 board.

For only a few games that are realy benefitting from it?

Offcourse the 4690k is better in gaming, but this still depends allot on the games you play.

Ok as I really cannot make my mind up on this i will sum up everthing as good and comprehensive as I can

I am currently running the following rig:

ASUS M5A97 R2.0

FX 8320 OC'd to about 4GHz with a CM Hyper 212 EVO

- not sure about temps as i get inconsisten and vastly varying data from any tool

8GB of 1333Mhz RAM from Team Group Elite (no name shit i guess)

Gigabyte Rev 2 280X

Corsair CX600M PSU

as you guys explained, swapping the 8320 for an 8320E would not improve (could even decrease) my experience

So now I see two options:

keep everything as it is,

or get an i5 4690k and an ASUS Z97-K Mobo

now why i even started to think about this is:

im planning to build a pc and sell it; from parts lying around at my place, namely, an fx 4100, a asus direct cu 2 hd 7770 ghz ed. and a lc power(again no name shit i guess) 550w psu

to complete this i would have to buy ram and a mobo

for that i chose to get 8GB of Vengeance Pro 2133Mhz for me to keep and put the old ram in the rig to be sold

and the MSI 760GMA-P34 (FX) as mobo

if i would get the intel cpu and new mobo, i would not have to spend money on the second am3+ mobo, also, it would be a worthy upgrade for my own rig and the higher end mobo that i use now might get me a few more bucks for the "trash rig"

now if i pull this off right, i might even have to spend almost no money:

there is a cashback offer for qualifying asus mobo and intel cpu combos going on where i live (germany) i could get 35€ back from that

i could sell the trash rig for 250€ or more:

what i would have to pay:

Core i5 4690k - 193,26€

Asus Z97-K - 98,84€

Vengeance Pro 8GB 2133Mhz - 82,34€

Sums up to: 374,44€

BUT i would send the 8320 back wich would get me 120€

and if the cashback thing really works i get another 35€

When i keep the 8320 i would buy:

Vengeance Pro 8GB 2133Mhz - 82,34€

MSI 760GMA-P34 (FX) - 45,85

Which sums up to; 128,19€

What should i do?

MSI 760GMA-P34 (FX) board is rubbish

no worry for me there, as i will sell the pc in which that mobo could go

like i said above, 4690K will be better in gaming.

However since you allready run a AMD FX setup, why not just keep the FX8320?

the E versions are not faster or something.

Its not worth to upgrade to a 8320e or 8370e, because they are nothing faster.

they are all the same as the FX8320 FX8350 basicly, the only the E versions are slower.

Same counts for the FX9590, this is totaly the same chip as the FX8350 only diffrence is its higher stock speeds.

If you realy want better pure gaming performance, then you could upgrade to intel 4690K, however not all games are realy gonne bennefit from this, so its highly depends on the games you play.

In the end its up to you if its worth it to upgrade to intel or not.

But if you have that crappy Msi AM3+ board right now, then you basicly could better upgrade to intel right away!!!

okay then again i ask how about skyrim performance with enb and stuff? will it be better with the i5?

and will i have better results with the i5 in upcoming games like AC Unity, Far Cry 4 etc?

Generaly i5/i7 is way better CPU than anything AMD can offer. Why stay with inferior CPU, when you can switch to the better CPU?

Skyrim does definitely run better on the i5.

Farcry 4 idk that game is not there yet right?

please re read my long post on page 1, the msi board would be for a spare parts pc that i would sell, the mobo i use in my personal rig is the asus one

sure and so is the AC game but i think especially fc4 will be similar in terms of engine/performance etc to fc 3 so maybe one can already estimate how it will be from previous experiences
