Samsung showed off their curve monitors in IFA 2014

We had seen LG and Dell revealed their curve monitors last month. In IFA 2014, Samsung revealed theirs as well.

One of the two Samsung curve monitors is a 34" 21:9 monitor with a model number "SE790C". Like Dell's U3415W and LG's 34UC97, it is a 34" 21:9 3440x1440 monitor, with a viewing angle of 178 degree, and 3000:1 contrast ratio.

It has the similar T-shape stand design as Samsung's 28" TN and 32" PLS 4K monitor, but it has a 100mm height adjustment. It also has a 4 ports USB 3.0 hubs, 2 DisplayPorts and 1 HDMI ports, which PIP and PBP is supported. The monitor showed in IFA is a prototype, and this monitor is expected to be launched in Jan 2015, with no words on pricing.

The other curve monitor Samsung revealed is a 27" Full HD monitor, model number "SD590C". It is developed from the prototype showed in CES 2014. ( http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/99400-samsung-revealed-their-new-4k-monitors-and-full-hd-curve-monitor/ ) Similar to the 34" curve monitor, it has a viewing angle of 178 degree, 3000:1 contrast ratio, and 5ms response time. It has HDMI port, Displayport and D-Sub as input, and 2 5W speakers. It has a similar T-shape stand as other Samsung 4K monitor, but it has VESA mounting holes on its back. This monitor is expected to be launched in Oct 2014 globally, with a price tag of $410 euros.

As a PC monitor, I'd love to get 2 curved ones because it s going to be just one person stairing at the screen  gaming (at least in my case). But as a TV...nahh because If there is anyone with you watching the curved TV he won't have as good experience as the guy in the middle. For a TV I rather have a flat one like the new Sony Bravia.....now that s a great TV.

Samsung, why don't you realize that people want VESA mounting, not useless beautiful stands?

EDIT - I failed to see the first one...

I saw a much larger Samsung, I believe - not entirely certain, curved screen on display and in the shop I couldn't notice a tremendous reduction in in quality the higher I adjusted the viewing angle.

In fact, the colours performed and were visible at a much greater rate than my parents flatscreen TV's that are only a couple of years old.

I actually like these monitors and would possibly consider the non-ultra wide format option providing it was up to spec - I'd love some more info on colour and response times!

I'm not sure if the 34" support VESA mount, as I can't see clearly in those photos, but the 27" definitely support VESA mount.

Why do they always come with shitty stands. You pay so much for the panel and they cheap out or go for design over function. Design is overrated, I always go for function over design. Otherwise you should go and buy beats audio crap headphones.

Design is overrated

It really isn't, people will buy things because they look cool or pretty, whether its to look cool in a shop, or a cool picture online I bet 75% of monitors Samsung sell are to people purely after the aesthetics

If there were 2 identical monitors, and one was say 20% more money but looked nicer, I would probably spend the extra money

These monitors are for professionals though. I just really hate how the industry has changed from being all about practicality to being oh that looks pretty. Touch this and it slides all that crap. It's why W8 was utter crap and why W9 will likely also be crap. Functionality is always number one in my books and it's likely number 1 in everyones books on this forum as well. It's why we love PC's over all the other platforms. Looks are important though but that always comes after you have chosen what you want or need. You wouldn't buy a 560Ti over a 780Ti because the 560Ti looks better.

I agree to a point, but technology is no longer for the enthusiast and is become more and more mainstream, you will find most companies make things just to sell to make money, therefore if they can make a product more appealing they will get a bigger market and sell more, thus making more money

the enthusiast market is small, you have to realise we are the exception. I know tons of people with gaming pcs and all sorts who would not know the difference between 560Ti and a 780Ti, but they still enjoy technology

I have seen them be like "omg I should buy this pc case it looks so cool" and its some horrible led fan monstrosity that costs about £10,

most people associate looks with performance, us techy people who read benchmarks and statistics and care about performance, functionality etc are unfortunately in the minority

yes people care about functionality, but I guarantee a better looking product sells better than an ugly but more functional one

Hense why Apple makes so much money. It's also why I refuse to purchase a smartphone until someone comes out with a sensible option for the sensible man. No touch screen, full keyboard and a mouse nipple. They work really well. It would also have to run a Linux distro.

That is just a portable PC, which would be clunky and horrible to use, thats why I like iOS, its not trying to be a PC, its just trying to be a phone with useful or fun programs and apps

Get the Magic W3, full windows 7 smartphone or a viliv s5 umpc or something, but its not as great to use as youd think

That said I had an old HTC HD2 running full linux, was pretty useless though

Sorry what I was describing wouldn't be a small device but rather quite a large one. You would have a holster type carry case for it and it would be awesome. I want it so badly. Probably the same size as a Nexus 7 but with an extendable keyboard that has a nipple on the right hand side of the screen. Touchscreens are overrated. It would also have to be pretty powerful as it would have a full Linux distro on it like Mint but optimized for a portable device. Anyway that is just what I want.

I just want something portable that is powerful enough and has good enough battery life to run some GBA and NDS emulators, has at least 1 usb port 10" screen, SSD amd that is really it. If OQO came out today with that then I would be really happy. I would buy one for £300 which is probably asking too much.

£300 would be too little, I use my shield for emulators, its absolutely fantastic at it! even ps1 and psp games!,

That pandora thing looks pretty cool but it's way too expensive for what it is. I might just end up getting an old ThinkPad E or something. They are the only laptops I would ever get but they are also quite pricey. The Shield is probably my best bet because of it's power but It's quite large and the screen has huge bezel's. I might wait and see if Nvidia comes out with another Shield.
