$2800 X99 gaming/streaming rig (Canada)

Cadfael

I'm building a new PC for a friend of mine with a total budget of $2800. However his big condition was that every component had to have at least a 3 year in-store replacement plan on it. This lowers both my overall budget as well as limiting the number of places to buy parts from. The computer will be used for xsplit/OBS streaming, gaming (high/ultra at 1080p) as well as video editing and possibly 3d modeling down the road. Overclocking wont be an issue for now so I'm sticking with cheap cooler like the CM Hyper 212 Evo. Attached are a few builds I've been working on. Feedback would be much appreciated.

NOTE: The build with 5960X processor would reuse a 670 sli setup from a previous computer

NOTE 2: I realize X99 will use DDR4 memory but system configurator  that i used wouldn't allow me to add DDR4. The memory used is of equivalent price to its ddr4 counterpart within 30 dollars (16GB and 32GB)

I don't think DD3 is compatible in that board @Cadfael. Check it again. It will probably add another $200 to the build

5820k and be done with it.

Not even 3d modeling programs really need to use all 8 cores unless you're rendering with it but than you can use Cuda. it's a waste of money for much more.

He isn't even 3d modeling alot. He edits a lot of videos to edit. He's put on a much shorter time line for Rendering video things than most people. 6 cores is enough unless you're professional.

Edit: lets not forget he's rendering 4k downsampled 1080p pro res.

@Cadfael,

The benchmarks I have seen show very little gaming performance difference between the Haswell-E cpu. There isn't even that much difference except for the most cpu intensive tasks. If gaming is the principal use of the system an i7-5820K would allow for other components to be improved.

A better psu is a definite must. The EVGA 220-G2-0850-XR is very popular right now (it has a 10 year warranty) and is much better than the Silverstone. The Corsair HX-850 would also be a better choice than the Silverstone.

Why such a small ssd?

funny, my first choice psu was an evga 850w G2 but the price at my local computer store was recently hiked up to $200 so I went with the silverstone to keep costs down. hopefully I can get them to pricematch newegg. As for the 5820k vs 5930k, I happen to think the extra 12 PCI-E lanes is worth it for future expandability.

also 128gb is plenty of space for an OS and a few games.

CA$200 is outrageous.    If you can't get a price match it may be worth ordering the psu from Newegg.

From my reading of the GA-X99-UD5 specs it appears that on-board RAID is not supported when an M.2 or SATA Express ssd is installed.

Granted 128GB is enough for the system and some programs. Personally I am a fan of large ssd. With a 1TB unit for example one can often eliminate a more failure prone and noisier hdd. Depending on the editing software and projects being worked on extra ssd space can also improve editing and rendering performance.

Yeah a large ssd is really nice, but I'm of the opinion that a 120/128gb ssd is a great starting point. It frees up a bit of the budget and it is really easy to add another ssd down the road.

So I think I settled on a final build, I can get a local store to price match all the items plus about 300 dollars extra for a 3 year warranty

 http://ca.pcpartpicker.com/p/f4KP8d

total of $2765

is that the ssd that is slower than an hdd?

if so then you should either go with your m.2 choice or another ssd like the 840 evo

The Kingston V300 ssd do not have a very good reputation. Apparently they switched to much slower memory chips early in production, shortly after sending out review samples and without any announcement of the change.

You may want to consider Sandisk SDSSDP-128G-G25, A-Data ASP610SS3-128GM-C, or Sandisk SDSSDXP-120G-G25.
