Is this a good upgrade?

I recently built my first pc and I went with the pentium g3258 just to get me started but it isn't really cutting it for me multitasking wise. I like to have many tabs open and Skype and game at the same time but I can't really do that. Would an i5 4690k or maybe even an i7 4790k be a huge difference? I mostly game but would like to get into editing and also do some work in autodesk inventor/revit. I live in the us. And my current build is right here http://pcpartpicker.com/user/p_ziggles/saved/88hmP6

with Autodesk and Revit

you def be happy with the i7 for the 4 cores and 8 treads

Budget? Uses? Currency? Location? Operating System? Peripherals? Monitor? Use PCPartPicker wherever possible.

i guess a i7 4790k would be better than a i5 because your doing some editing and some modeling which hyper threading would benefit from that. Gaming would be the same on the i5 as the i7 but the i7 has hyper threading which your programs would benefit from. Also i suggest upgrading the card to a 280x or 290 or 770 or 780 if you can afford it.

i7 4790k FTW

the 4790k will wreck the pentium

Look at my profile you will see my build and you can copy it or cosider it so you wont have to do your research

I agree, the pentium should only be used for a system purely for gaming

CPU: i5-4690k GPU: 280x Toxic PSU: Coolermaster V750 Motherboard: Z97X-SOC RAM: Ripjaws 1x8 1600mhz Case: Corsair 750D HDD: WD Blue 1TB

Yea but it can also be used for light tasks, I built my Mom a pc for her birthday xD With this cpu and it works well for her I have it overclocked to 4ghz since it is just too slow loading things at stock

I would get an FX-9590 after September 1st, it will be the same price as the i5-4690K, OCs reliably and is much, MUCH better at multitasking

FANBOY OF: PowerColor, be quiet!, Transcend, G.Skill, Phanteks

FORMERLY FANBOY OF: A-Data, Corsair, Nvidia

DEVELOPING FANBOY OF: AMD (GPUS), Intel (CPUs), ASRock

Ok. Thanks everybody. I will definetly grab the i7 when I get the cash. Probably around Christmas time. There is a microcenter nearby as well so I can get it for cheaper. Would the upcoming gtx 870 be a good card to pair with it?

I already have a z97 mobo is the thing preventing that

When I was planning my pc I was gonna get the 9590 but I just Couldnt help getting the 4790k as it is much better in many ways :P

My main concern for the 9590 was its TDP being like 240 or 220watts but It was hard finding a board that could support that at the time and I also thought about The heat this gives off when facing big tasks

It was just too problematic for me at the time and the 4790k beats it in many things so I decided to pay a bit more for the i7

tdp is the amount of heat it kicks out, not the watts it consumes

Yea i know :P I got a bit confused as I was trying to say that the 220w tdp would draw more power and I couldnt find motherboards that could supply enough for it to run at its full capability

Here thats what I meant :P read the TDP part

http://www.pc-specs.com/cpu/AMD/FX/FX-9590/1875

i really dont like amd cpus for a couple of reasons 1. intel has much better single core performance 2. the die is still 32nm 3. its not as efficient and 4. the upgrade ability is limited. im not an intel fanboy and i would prefer an fx6300 over an i3 but the i3 has more upgrade ability options over the years.

i3 is really damn bad :P Especially now 2014 :D

i3 is a cpu for use in notebooks not desktops (in my opinion) :D

idek why i brought up an i3 thats not relevant to this topic but isnt the 9590 around the same price as a 4790k?

4790k is a bit more expensive but performs much better

you may need to back off with the one liner posts

it may be annoying to some users

it may also be against CoC

the 4820k is like a placeholder cpu imo until you save up for a 4930k because a 4770k beats a 4820k in 95 percent of benchmarks and im still confused as to why someone would buy a 4960x over a 4930k

ahahaha im getting this :P
