New build ideas for 2014/2015

ScarisRacer

Hi everyone. I'm quite new to the forums, so I hope you all can help me out. I would like to do a new build at some point, but I do have a few questions though. Here's a list of the potential build so far (some parts are placeholders):

ASUS Maximus VII Hero

Intel Core i7 4790K

Corsair H100i with 2 x SP120 High Performance Retail Fans

Corsair Vengeance Pro Series 16GB 1866MHz C9 Memory Kit

2 x EVGA GeForce GTX 780 3GB Superclocked in SLi

Samsung 840 Pro 1TB SSD (yes, I'm going 100% SSD with this one)

Creative Sound Blaster Z PCIe

3 x AF140 Quiet Edition Fans

ASUS Blu-Ray Combo BC-12D2HT

NZXT HUE 5.25" RGB Color Changing LED Controller

First of all, with this spec, how powerful should the PSU be? I've been doing a lot of research into this and now I'm not sure how much power I actually need. After using a lot of calculators, all of the results have been very inconsistent. Some ranging from just under 700W all the way up to 1200W!!

And secondly, in terms of the case, I would like a full tower. I've now narrowed my choices to two that I like the most, both of which are from Corsair. I'm torn between the Graphite 760T or the Obsidian 750D. So, which one do I pick.

I hope you can help me out, as you all sound like a great bunch of people :) and let me know what you think of the build.

Thanks in advance!!

What is your budget, location and do you need peripherals/monitor?

750W is enough for the PSU

I personally like the 750D more than the 760T

If this is for some time later, come back then for planning when you're ready. Most parts are changing prices and new things are coming out.

Welcome to the forum and

Get a single 780 ti instead of 2 780's or you can get 2 290x's

for a 780 Sli setup 750W would be good

for a single 780 ti 600W is good (or if you want to get another one later on get a 750W)

for 290X Crossfire setup get 800W PSU just to be safe

and as for the cases both are good but which one looks better to you, personally i'd go with the 750D.

@CoolBeans, when it comes to budget, I'll be buying parts individually anyway. Location, merry old England and I'm not too worried about peripherals/monitor ATM.

Dual 780 Ti's on 750w might be tight don't you think?

Also, to the OP, if you aren't building this until next year or so, post then. The 800 series is coming in October AFAIK.

That is really weird... I would like to think in terms of overclocking but I doubt it would take 98w... That is 49w extra a card... I guess if you aren't going for crazy overclocks it is fine.

Mind = Blown

Do not buy parts over time. Never a good idea. If you buy dual 780's now and the 800 series comes out, what are you going to do? Buying all at one time is usually the best idea.

Hmm...not bad. But, obviously, not quite what I want overall.

It will have the same performance as the one you posted, you can change the case to 750D/760T

Well, if the overall budget was my main concern, then yes that build would work out fine for me. But again, as I said before, I'm buying the parts individually, so budget isn't a problem.

If you're buying over time, buy the CPU/Mobo now, and put any semi-decent GPU you can find in. CPUs aren't worth upgrading generation to generation, but GPUs are a somewhat more appreciable improvement.

Also, why do you want that sound card? RoG boards offer pretty damn good audio anyway, and the sound blaster Z is hardly the most premium audio offering out there.

Edit: Shouldn't this be in the new builds / planning subforum?

DO NOT BUY PARTS OVER TIME.

What is the point of that? You'll have spent money on parts you bought awhile ago when you could get better parts for the same price at the time you actually build.

Secondly, you will never know if all your parts work properly until you build. By the time you build, several of your parts will be outside their RMA window, and you'll have lost the money you spent.

Again, buying over time is pointless. Very. Pointless.

I will be doing that first, good shout. I posted here because I wasn't sure which power supply would be best for the build, but I think I've worked it out now :). The GPUs I'll buy as one of the last items as well.

Well, I don't have all of the money for the entire build straight away. With what I'm earning at the moment, I can only buy what I can afford. Some bits I can get together, but not all.

Thank you all for your suggestions and advice, I really appreciate it :)

For the case, I'm going for the Obsidian 750D

750D_hero_low.png

And for the PSU, the AX860i should be ample I reckon.
