Can internet be throttled by pc?

kto8257

I recently downloaded about 20GB of games on my pc and now the internet on my pc is very slow while my laptop and phone internet is fine. Everything is connected by wifi and this happens every time I download something big. Wifi  router is DIR-850L

No, though your internet can be throttled by your IPS. But you probably know that.

It actually can!

I remember an issue where I used a program called NetLimiter for limiting the bandwith of single programs.

Everything worked out fine, but when I used an old version of NetLimiter in Windows 8 it slowed my whole traffic on my pc down to a few kbps.

Your behaviour - throttled after downloading big files - seems weird though.

Try doing online speedtests before and after downloading big files, so you (and we) can see how much of an impact it really is.

Do this on your desktop as well as on your laptop. Post results here.

*ISP :P

But if a computer is very slow/old it can struggle when loading web pages. Modern machines can usually handle it though.

OP: are you sure that your internet connection doesn't have a data cap that the ISP has set? Often they throttle usage after a certain amount has been downloaded within a specific time limit.

Haha, not sure what I was thinking there.

Maybe that TN was faster so didn't get throttled as much? :P

My normal speed is 20 down 1 up and right now it's 15 down 1 up but it's not the speed that I notice, its that it like the internet is on for a few seconds then its off for a few seconds

I am for sure that I am not over the cap and my computer is pretty new

Do you experience this only in your browser or on the whole system, say games and applications?

Did you try another browser?

Depending on your setup yes a PC or other hardware can bottleneck your connection.

What would bottleneck it though?

Well, thats tough.

So you cannot be sure what's causing the issue here - but most likely it's software related.

I can advise two things:

1. If you are familiar with linux distros, you might want to get a live CD and boot it up. Download big files and check if the issue is still existent in linux.

//edit: If this happens, it may be a hardware problem or something with your router.

2. Reformat your pc and hope that the issue will be gone.

//edit:

Does this also happen when downloading big files on your laptop?

I don't think this will help though because it happened when I had window 7 last month too

Fair enough. So the issue might really be your hardware or router.

//edit: And I don't mean bottlenecks - maybe your network card (or motherboard) is broken.

Maybe. I plan to replace the router so maybe that will help.

Well I have tried several usb wifi adapters and it still happened so it probably isn't my network card.

Its your network maybe router or wireless card... can also be a bad wired connection or a slow switch.
