So I went to a hifi store :D

Lays

Yesterday I went to "Echo Hifi" in Portland Oregon, about 40 miles from my house and figured I'd share my experience. (This is kinda a review, but not really)

( @Dragonzeanse went there a few weeks ago and wrote a more in-depth review)

The place was really cool inside, dimmed lights and some "sound-art" on the walls. The employees were a bit flaky but they helped me with what I asked so I can't really complain.

I tried on Sennheiser hd800, HD650, LCD-2 and LCD-3's.

The HD650 and LCD-2/ LCD-3 sound quite similar, but the LCD-2/LCD-3 were miles ahead in comfort (for me atleast)  I tried the LCD-2 with suede pads, and the 3's with leather, the leather cups almost suction cup to my head, and sealed perfectly, but I think for long time wear that'd be really annoying and sweaty maybe.  I was quite suprised how well the LCD-2/3 "isolated" even though they were open. The bass was on the LCD-2/3 was phenomenally clear and deep, but without that weird "loose- vibrating" noise that subwoofers make, while still providing that "punchy-ness"

The HD800 is a different story...   I hear lots of people call it an "analytical" headphone, and never quite understood what people meant..

After wearing them I figured out what people meant, they don't seem very much fun to listen to because of the way they sound IMO.  They were crystal clear, (which I think is why people say they're "analytical" ) but I noticed they didn't have that "fun-ness" that the LCD-2/3/HD650 had with the lower ends of music.

wearing the lcd-2's :D

Glad you enjoyed it there. Remember: if you want brick and mortar shops to still be there in 20 years, then you have to unfortunately spend the extra money.

I quite like music shops, like HMV here in the UK, but recently, they have gone for a more 'Sell everything asap before everyone figures out how to torrent things' approach, which is a shame.

Compatible with Windows 95

hi darrino. So now are you going to 100% get the HE-500's?

ya, the LCD-2 reviews + he-500 reviews I've read said they're basically the exact same except for the bass on the LCD-2 is a bit better, and the build quality is nicer for the LCD-2 but I don't mind that, although the LCD-2 were literally a dream to wear on my head.

When you put them on, you literally KNOW you wearing something that should cost 1,000$.

I didn't get that feeling with the hd800's on :/

I tried the LCD2 myself, also on a headphone store. Listening to those was nothing short of a bliss. The sound was so natural, warm, and solid. Too bad, it needs decent DAC and amp to fully optimize the sound. Tried plugging it to my Ipad 3 + Fiio amp in between, and the sound degraded. Meaning to bring home the bliss I felt, I'd have to bring home the whole package, the LCD, good DAC, and amp.

I tried w/ my ipod touch too it sounded bad even though I took the time to put "better quality" music on it.

The source they had at the store was much better, it got rid of the staticy distortion of the 256 mp3's on my ipod

Totes! Only bought my MOE's because I appreciated the friendly sales dude and the peaceful demo'ings they allowed me when I went to my local audiophilec store.

Mr. Darrino has told me the sales guy that "helped" him wasn't very useful, and I probably wouldn't have given them any of my money either.

I even listened to FLAC files on my Ipad (with the FLAC player application), but still degraded sound than their original setup on their testing booth. They have a bookshelf DAC and a tube amp, which I estimate maybe around 3-5 grand on those 2 alone. There's a saying in my country, money doesn't lie. Pay steaks, and you'll get steaks....
