GPU Upgrade - 670 Sli, 780 Ti or wait for Maxwell

Go to solution Solved by spencermehta,

I would rather not get a second hand card and I can't find another 670 that is the same model as mine new from a website I trust. Since the verdict was pretty much split between SLI'ing and getting a 780 Ti I have decided to get a 780 Ti.

Thank you all so much for your help, I really appreciate it.

Do you know approximately when the maxwell cards will be out?

Nobody does, though some estimates have said sometime around June/July.. Personally, I wouldn't want to spend $700 on a top-tier GPU that will be superseded two months after I got it. It makes more sense to me to just spend a minimal amount an a second 670 if you want a performance increase RIGHT NOW, and/or buy a theoretical 880 when it comes out.

From what I've heard, SLI doesn't have as many issues as many people say, so you shouldn't really have any trouble with it. I have friends who only use dual-GPU setups, and other than a few oddball unoptimized games, they don't really have any complaints about it.

i7 not perfectly stable at 4.4.. #firstworldproblems

You could go 780ti once high end Maxwell comes out and (maybe) it comes down in price as a result. I'm guessing you're in NA and AMD cards are still marked up like crazy, my 290X DCUII has come down by about £20 in the last couple of months and the twin frozr has come down by £70 on SCAN recently so if you're in the UK check that out.

I have two 670s in sli and they perform pretty well. However, in BF4, they struggle to keep 144fps at ultra, which I find quite surprising because BF3 ran so well and BF4 doesn't look that much better in my opinion. The newer nvidia cards seem to run it better, even though they are technically less powerful than two 670s. However, it may be because I am using windows 7 and windows 8 seems to give BF4 a bit of a performance boost.

I'm waiting for maxwell and my two 670s are performing well, so I suggest you try and find another 670 because it will be cheaper and will perform well for the time being.

The reason the newer cards are outperforming your 670s is because the drivers are designed for the newer cards.

780ti=2880 cuda cores 3GB

2x670=2688 cuda cores 2GB each

A Titan is 2 670s. A 780ti is more powerful than a Titan. Clock for clock the 780ti will be more powerful. You also don't have to deal with SLI incompatibilities and you have an extra GB of frame buffer clocked aGHz higher. Go with the 780ti. It will be a better investment with the same performance, as you can sli another 780ti in the future and you won't be bottlenecked by not being able to oc your CPU. Enjoy your beastly rig!
