Thoughts on my build?

BlueMagma1
Go to solution Solved by DocSwag,

Thanks to all that comment last question is , is there a difference in having more ram slots being used

Let's say I want 16 gb ram and there's 4 slots is there a difference if I use more than 1/2/4

4x4gb =16

Or 2x8gb=16

Or just 16gb

Does it affect anything.

Yes it can make a difference. Nowadays most CPUs are either quad channel or dual channel. Most extreme editions are quad channel while mainstream ones (like what you have) are dual channel. Basically in quad channel the CPU treats the ram as four sticks, even if you have 8, while in dual channel the CPU treats it as you have 2 sticks, even if you have 4 sticks. Normally more ram sticks is better (if you have four sticks there are 4 whole buses you can access versus 2 with 2 sticks, meaning you could double your ram bandwidth) but because z97 only supports dual channel that means that even if you have 4 sticks it treats it as if you have 2 8gb sticks. Therefore there is no difference between 4x4gb and 2x8gb ram if they both have same clocks and latencies and all that. 2x8 is generally better because 1. It's generally cheaper 2. It gives you upgradibility. If you have 16 gb and need 32 all you have to do this pop in two more sticks. If all 4 slots are populated you need to buy a whole new ram set. Buying a new set is more expensive when compared to buying just 2 more sticks. 2x8gb is the better option unless you are going x99(which you aren't). Basically go 2x8 it's got benefits and no drawbacks.

http://pcpartpicker.com/p/GQLkpg My build, thoughts on it? Also what's the difference in MHz in ram ?

What is your budget? No skylake?

Windows 10?

The difference in MHz is the speed of the RAM. The higher the speed the faster they go!

That RAM is a no go. Your board will just downclock it because it doesn't support its operating voltage.

Also, if this is a gaming PC, I would recommend getting a 4690K and a 390X instead.

2400MHz RAM will run at a slower speed to match your motherboards maximum RAM voltage. In gaming, there is no difference. In rendering and editing, there is a marginal difference.

Because right now 16 go ram 1600mhz and 2400mhz are same price and the 18mhz is more for weird reason , they're both on deals I have 2x4 hyper x 1600mhz ram should I upgrade or keep the ram. (Like 50% sale off the corsair vengeance on Amazon)

Looks like a great build, although there are cheaper R9 390's -but I see you're trying to stick with the MSI theme.

You're not going to notice a real world difference with the RAM, get whatever kit you like that is cheap. Personally, I'd go with the G.Skill Trident X's if you're sticking to 2400MHz.

So what the difference if I buy a 2400mhz ram and 1600mhz ram ?

Higher speed is always better. The MHz on ram is the number of clocks per second the ram performs. Let's say your os needs to access the value of a variable "hi". On nearly all ram it will take about the same time. This is because of latency. Latency is basically the number of clocks between when you request for the info and when the ram retrieves it. Typically with higher ram clocks the latency becomes higher, so on nearly all sticks no matter ddr2 ddr3 or ddr4 it usually takes about the same time. The difference is memory bandwidth. Because the memory is clocked higher in one second you can "ask" for more information than if you have a lower clocked memory stick. For e most part memory bandwidth doesn't make a big difference in most games, but in some games(I believe battlefield 4 is one of them) the game is accessing the memory so many times a second that higher clock speeds can actually increase performance. Higher memory clocks is just a future proofing measure for the most part. However it does require a higher voltage, so either your 2400 MHz ram will run at a slightly reduced clock speed(though the latency will be less as well) in order to stay within the recommended voltage or you will have to run it higher than the recommended voltage. Keep in mind running at higher voltages than recommended can fry the cpu's memory controller over time. If they cost the same though always go with the higher clocked one. Hope this helps!

If you are mostly gaming you could go with a 6600k instead and upgrade gpu to a 390x. Also what red will you be running at and what games will you be playing? Is this primarily a gaming machine?

If you are into spending around 90 more bucks newegg has an amazing deal for a 960 gb ssd right now for only 200 bucks. You could just dump your hdd and ssd for this one. It's the same ultra 2 you're using for your ssd right now. If you want it though you should get it quick I think it's a Black Friday sale so it should be gone soon. If you don't want that much you can just spend 30 bucks more and get a 480 go ssd instead of 240 which is worth it too.
