Temp difference on 3x120 vs. 3x140

You mean the water delta? It's depends on more factors. What water delta you're aiming for, what rpm you're willing to run your fans, what rad you're planning on using, how many watts of heat you're trying to dissipate.

 

According to MartinsLiquidLab's testing, a thick 3x120 rad like the UT60 can dissipate 210W of heat with 1400rpm fans and water deltaT of 10 degrees. There is not much info on 3x140 rads but you could search this for the rad you plan on using.

 

A 3x140 has 36% more rad surface area vs a 3x120. Provided we're talking about rads with the same thickness. You're looking at 285W-300W of heat dissipation give or take in the case of the UT60.

 

The water delta is pretty much the same thing, yeah.

 

The point I was making is that if you're already able to run the fans slowly and dissipate the heat you're generating effectively that 36% more surface area becomes academic.

The bigger rad won't fit without modding, and im not sure if i want to do that, is it worth it?

 

I have a CM Haf X case and want to top mount it, there is only holes for a 120x3 rad, will have to make some changes to make it fit i guess.

 

Anyone have any thoughts?

More surface area normally means better temps. Just like how the AIO Kraken x60 does better at 280mm than the 240mm does.

What are you cooling? Maybe you don't need more than a 3x120 anyway.

 

A 3x140 has more surface area than a 4x120, so it'd have a nice bit of rad space more. Not sure the temps will be significantly better for it to be worth modding your case tho.

it will allow you o slightly lower fan speed but dont expect much diffrence

Im, at the moment, cooling a AMD FX 8120, but im going to be adding a graphicscard and may upgrade the cpu to a FX 8370.

 

But taking your advice i might just change the fans to better ones instead of modding to much. Or maybe add a single 120 or 140 rad somewhere

Just finished my build, with my 120x3 + 140x1 rad

Now its even cooler than before, even with a graphics card in the loop
