Is this the first time that a series of chips have been incompatible with older mobos with the same socket type?

I find it odd that even though the current gen of intel chips are still.... technically LGA 1151, they won't work on older boards (Z170 etc.) because of physical limitations. No bios updates are going to fix this.

 

Is this the first time this has happened? Why not just call it like "LGA 1151b" or something and put a special notch in the CPU so you can't try to put it on old 1151 boards?
