how do they sound?

I wish I had the words to describe them.  I upgraded from my HD800 cans; I skipped the 'S' version.

It's a little weird going (back) to closed-back cans.  I've lost some of my room's, or my house's background noises.  Like hearing my dogs play or the air handler from my heater kick on or off.  All of that is gone now.  That's not bad, it's just different; I've been using open-backed phones for a while now.

These have more bass to them than the HD800 do, but it's not crappy "Beats" bass.  Not overpowering in the least.  Just enough of a thump to sound and feel good.

I did a dumb(?) test and, while listening to some of the "Lord of the Rings" score, cranked the volume on the amp.  Way higher than I should have.  I'd seen vids of others testing that out and the way the glass caps are shaped, it ends up lessening the pain from loud music, if that makes sense.  You still hear it get louder, and you feel it get louder.  But it does so safely.  I don't know how to properly describe it.  And it's not something I'm going to try too many more times; I like how good my hearing still is at the ripe ol' age of 45.  I don't want to risk damaging it. ?

Stupidly expensive?  Yes.  Worth it?  So far, yes.  But that's certainly an individual thing.

very cool to know I wouldn't mind a pair but understand the lack of surrounding sounds in headphones my current  set is Samson SR850s and are semi open and sound "good" but I have to have people repeat themselves all the time when I have them on I would love to hear more around me my next set is going to be open designed.

I'm currently driving them with Senn's older HDVA600 amp.  The balanced connection to the amp is coming from my Mackie mixer.  I was kicking around the idea of also replacing the amp (it's aged pretty well!) with their HDV820.  But what I can't figure out is: are there enough changes to the analog side of the new 820 amp to be worth my time?  They've done a lot of work with the 820's DAC, and if that's your thing: cool.  But it's not mine, and I don't care about that part of it.
