Hey,

 

so I am in kind of a need to update my Desktop, currently I have the following setup:

 

i7 6700k

16 GB of ram

650w gold psu

gtx 1070

 

I am looking to switch to a threadripper platform, the 2950x specificially. Question is, will a new threadripper be released soon(within 3-6 Months)? Should I wait for Zen2?

If you are gaming wait for Ryzen 2 as it will have the cores for mutlitasking but the clock speeds and IPC for gaming. A win win

Well no one answered your question but from what I have read 3rd gen Threadripper should launch sometime late 2019.  So yeah more than 6 months but within reason in terms of waiting.  Honestly if you are sold on TR now I would dive in but go 1950X and get one on sale for $550 or try to get one used in the $400 or bellow, so when TR3 comes out you can sell the chip for a few hundred dollars to offset the probably $900 3950X

 

What I think the biggest improvement in TB3 will be is clock speeds, so for someone who wants to game and render TB3 could be the Holy Grail of HEDT.  Maybe 4.7GHZ???

AMD has been very good about keeping their promise about mobos and next gen chips.  I do think TR3 could be more efficient as well so I don't think there will be issues with overclocking.  A few high end X399 boards recommend additional cooling with existing X399 when overclocking but aren't required, so yeah chances are very good AMD just requires a BIOS update and it's plug and play

Kind of in the same boat... been running an i7-4790K, 32GB, 1TB NVME, gtx 1080 (CPU is 5.5yr old now, nvme and 1080 about 2+ yo now).  Thinking of pulling the trigger on TR3 (ryzen 2 platform) when they come out... was really tempted by the sale prices on the 1st gen TR with the newer chipset, but holding off for now.  I swear in 25 years this is by far the longest I've ever had the same computer, used to be a 1-2 year upgrade cycle.  Harder part for me, get an RTX, or keep my 1080 and put like an RX 570 in the computer when I pass/sell it off.  I don't game, been running macOS/hackintosh.  Will probably give Linux (Ubuntu or Elementary) another try.
