If you're purchasing it now, than I'd get the 9600k. Not that much more expensive and it delivers a performance that is slightly below the 8700k.

the 9600k has some improvements over the 8600k and i think prices are the same/only a small difference.

so 9600k would be the way to go. keep in mind you also need to upgrade your motherboard.

are you deadset on intel? Cos AMD is betrer value.

And are you in need of an immediate upgrade? If you can wait a few months (2-3 at most) go for what ever is best according to the reviews at that time. And don't wait longer, cos then you'll be waiting forever.

Honestly until they upgrade the gpu it likely won't matter if they go Intel or AMD as they will be gpu bottlenecked.

I'm assuming the usecase is gaming.
if you can, jump up to a 1070ti/1080 to get the best out of your build.

You could probably save some money by lowering your mhz in ram, to 2400.

true that. but I imagine a jump from an i3 4150 to i5-8xxx/9xxx = significant upgrade plans. reasonable to assume the gpu will be upgraded at the same time or soon after

Imo, a Ryzen 1600 or 2600, or an 8400 would make more sense. Save the money, invest it elsewhere. You'll be fine with higher end GPUs.

fair enough. I think you're all sorted then. Go for the 9600k assuming it's available, and lower thee mhz in your ram, RAM's way expensive. And you don't need 3000

In addition to saving on the cooler.

And again, Ryzen is an option.

An R5 2600 would save you like $150 for no performance impact in gaming with a 1060. I used to recommend 8400 around that price range because it's a little better at gaming with higher end gpus but after the 2600 dropped in price and the 8400 increased the 2600 is pretty much a no brainer over the 8400.

You could also save a bunch on the mobo.

depends, if it's 1080p you'll be fine, probably exceed 60fps. If you have an ultrawide monitor and/or higher resolution you will be averaging a little less. I've used the 1060 + ultrawide 1080p and games like grw wildlands and gta v did not exceed 60fps at max settings. High settings and a mix of medium-high, you'll exceed 60fps. But games like csgo, probably overatch and fortnite 100 fps is easy.
