What name for a Game Engine?

Hi,

Normally I post tech related stuff, but today I have something different to ask. Since I'm developing a Game Engine for quite a while now, I'm looking for a name for my Game Engine.(I currently just call it "Engine")

Since I'm terrible at naming things, I wanted to ask some other people. So I came here.

So, does anyone know a good name for my Game Engine?

There are just 2 rules, it can't already be an existing piece of software, and it can't contain the word "Game".

Anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks you!

Note: If you know a name, but don't want me to use it, then please don't post.

Unimaginary Engine.

Disunity4D

OR name after yourself to get all the credits, e.g wasab Engine

OR name it after your video games series. E.g. one if my favoriate indie game developer, spiderwebsoftware, name their engine for their geneforge series as simply geneforge engine. The game was pretty much written, made, code, and design by just one guy, jeff vogel, kudo to him

Thanks! What do you think about surreal engine? Yeah, it is kinda stolen from Unreal Engine, but I like it!

Do you think I'll get in trouble with their legal team or something?

Only if they're desperate AND your engine becomes super popular.  If you don't want to take the very slim chance they may try some type of legal gripe against you, pick something else.

That aside, I wouldn't post that on the forum because now it's something a lawyer could potentially reference if the LTT account was linked to you as the engine's creator.

Okay, I'll pick something else. But just out of curiosity, why could I get in trouble for it?(If I become popular) It is a different name after all right?

Nah, I don't think I have to worry about that, my GitHub name is waaayyy different from my LTT name.

You have any name suggestions?

Mmm...are the features for this game engine intended to be mainly for a particular genre or game type?  Do you already have a game in mind you're developing the engine for? Any special engine features that make it stand out?  Do you have a company name the engine would be the property of?  Would you ever want to license it?  I think all of those answers might influence potential names.

It's a 3D engine, but it isn't intended for any particular game. It is just like Unreal and Unity, you can create pretty much every game type with it.

Perhaps a play on words? Like Demension?

Just saying it's a 3D engine doesn't give a lot of input to a brainstorming creative process unfortunately.

Dimension engine already exists, so they aren't going to be happy if I call it demension.

Maybe it will help if I provide some names I like:

Unreal

Universe

frame

dream

unity

void

Does that help anything?

Well... Ethereal engine's already taken.  Cosmos engine's taken. Singularity engine's a thing.

Triaxial engine maybe?

Starfusion (I made that one), Nebula, Vortex, Anomaly

Could do combos too, like Vortexture, Nebula3D, etc.

Nebula3D is nice, but already exists.

Here is what I have, I like them but the site/project either already exists. or the name is just not it:

dream engine
universe engine
frame engine
heatstroke engine
flux engine
triaxial engine
hazard engine

Sunsea, Sunsea3D? Gravimax? Crescent?

Not sure which of the ones above have existing projects, but not going to look it up.  Thought about combining any of the ones you like that don't have a project to see if it makes a name you like?  Like Triaxial Flux?  Dream Hazard?  You could add letters to differentiate as well, like Dream Hazzard.

Dream Hazard is interesting. I was also thinking about lightbox engine. Do you think that one is a decent name? Or too basic?

If you're happy with the name and it isn't taken, I wouldn't have a problem with it.  I'd only call an engine name basic if you called it something like My 3D Engine, etc.

Okay thanks! I might go with lightbox engine, but I'll just think another while about it, see if I can come up with anything else.

I like that one, it sounds happy and positive, and has a connotation of your game engine being adopting and the feeling of bringing people together, since lightboxes are generally used to assist someone in creating something, such as someone using a lightbox to draw using transparent paper for animation or something alike.

Thank you! I mostly like it because it sounds positive, like you said.

Surreal Engine

That is also one I thought about, but I'm afraid the name will get me in legal trouble with Epic games.

they cant do anything because you named it “surreal” they copyrighted “unreal”

plus, Ureal means not seeming real.... where Surreal means Bizzare
