Gaming/Productivity CPU Needed

My plans are to upgrade my CPU but I cannot decide which one to go with, if anyone can help me to find a good one thank you! 

Since I am a student I need a budget and cannot go with the most expensive technology. Currently, the ones that I'm looking at is i5 8600k, i5 9600k, R5 2600X and R7 2700/X. 

Which one is worth the most and why? I will mostly use it for gaming and maybe some productivity. Sweden is hella expensive nowadays cuz all the taxes. 

 

My current specifications:

GPU: GeForce GTX 1070 8GB
CPU: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-4790 CPU @ 3.6Ghz
Memory: 16 GB RAM (15.94 GB RAM usable)
Current Resolution: 1920 x 1080, 144Hz
Operating System: Microsoft Windows 10 Home

 

I know the i7 4790 is not bad but nowadays I've started realizing that it's an older generation of Intel. 

And yes I do know that I need DDR4. So a new motherboard would also be appreciated if you linked me

a good budget one. + DDR4 itself. Thanks for reading and have a great continuation of your day!

Before you outline to us exactly what you want us to do, why  not read the forums and learn?

 

Every build thread has comments and questions trying to figure out the best way to build a system for a purpose.  You'll educate yourself quite a bit.

Ryzen is best for productivity, and when it comes to value it's a lot better. The 14 nm shortage Intel is dealing with right now means their prices are not that competitive. Also you said

But neither the i5 8600k nor the 9600k are exactly all that cheap.

2700X as it's faster than an 8700K in multicore workloads and games are slowly starting to scale across cores

Just keeping this here as a I think that since you don't want to spend crazy money that the 2700x is far better value. AMD is better for productivity than gaming but it is by no means bad for gaming. And with AMD announcing AM4 support through to 2020 it means we will likely see 7nm CPU's on AM4 which is what I'm holding out for. Meaning you can simply do a CPU upgrade in 2 years and get the latest and greatest without having to switch to a new motherboard. You won't get that from Intel.

 

The 8700k is the better choice for strictly gaming but the 2700x will still be great. AMD is just giving you a lot more for your money and is better value.

 

This coming from a guy that just spent the last 6 years ripping into AMD and now I am a proud owner of an R7 CPU, that said I have a i7-8700k and i7-6700k system as well.

I might of skimmed over the thread too fast, but If you're doing just gaming intel is a better choice, but if you're doing editing, things that need more cores and threads (multi-tasking) then amd is a better choice. Based on benchmarks I think (correct me if I'm wrong) the 8600k/9600k out of the box have the same gaming performance out of the box as the 2700x.

For the money, in my opinion, you get more value using AMD.  

 

You're looking into the i5 8600k.  6 cores, 6 threads, 3.6 ghz base clock speed. = $240 (in the states)

For about the same money, you can get a Ryzen 7 1800x.  8 cores 16 threads, 3.6 ghz clock speed.

 

In most gaming applications, currently, the multi threaded aspect won't help much, but it's night and day in other situations.  Also, I'm sure more and more games will start utilizing SMT2 or hypethreading more and more since it's pretty common place in a lot of mid priced CPU's these days. 

 

I'm not going to claim to be dedicated to either side, I've got an Intel and a Ryzen build, and they are both great.  But, the price per production aspect of the Ryzen build was so much nicer.  My intel build is an i7 7700k.  My Ryzen is an R7 1700x.  Got the 1700x on sale for $180, a little over half the cost of the 7700k, and with the simplest of overclock I'm running all 8 cores at 4ghz.  Obviously, not as fast as even the stock boost speed of the 7700k, but double the core count, double the thread count, half the price.  

 

If you're truly on a budget, and you want the most bang for your buck, go Ryzen.  Especially since you said you'd also like to use it for productivity as well.  Not saying the intel won't work for that, but multi core, multi threaded work loads are just shredded with SMT2 or hyperthreading.

If the i7 you have is working fine enough you're just upgrading for the sake of upgrading, being a student with limited income... why do any thing at all in the first place...?
