So yesterday I was testing out my brand new GPU, a Gigabyte GTX 1070 TI Gaming card. I was very impressed with the frame rates and all, but it was running at a max of 79C which I think to be a little to hot for my liking. Then today I took of the heat sink and applied some Arctic Silver 5 to the GPU and it dropped 13C and is running a 66C max. I am stressing it with Heaven. I don't know if this is normal or not, but I just thought I would throw it out there.

A 10 degree drop is not unheard of when replacing thermal paste, but isn't usually seen on a brand new card, unless it sat on a shelf for 2-3 years (unlikely, but may be possible).

I'm going to guess there was some mis-alignment out of the box before you re-did the paste.

I don't really know the thermal paste that was already on their was pretty new looking, it was white (Just the brand of paste they used I assume) but it was still wet looking like the new stuff I applied.

Probably just crappy paste or not enough to make good contact on both the GPU and heatsink.

Yeah probably, that would make sense.

I know people say that GPUs can sustain higher temps but it's never desirable.  Remember how Pascal responds to temp -- the lower the faster.

And I replaced the thermal paste on my five month old EVGA 1070ti and was greeted with flakes.  Needless to say -- the Noctua paste I applied immediately improved temps.  I am super glad my internet went out that night or I never would have stopped to replace my flaky thermal paste.
