can you raid a fast drive and a slow drive in a way that makes all writes go to the main drive then get copied over time to the slow one to increase reads?

That would be caching or tiering

 

Normal raid doesn't know about speeds.

Mirroring happens live, so that'd slow the fast drive to the speed of the slow drive.

With storage spaces in Windows 10, you can tier SSD and HDD storage for this. An alternative would be to accelerate the HDD with Optane.

What drives are you using and what is the system’s specs?

In my signature and the drives are Seagate barracudas one is like a grabbed out a dumpster drive

both 1tb 7200rpm one is notably slower though

I also run a 6gb ram caching config is that changes anything

You could use software solutions to schedule a back up every now and then to the slower device, tools like macrium can help:

I’d recommend using the slower drive as a backup like Seagate surfer said...if you don’t already have one. Otherwise just get an SSD and don’t bother wasting time with RAID 0 or 1 for your OS.
